where I was staying and they'd
want to go out for ice cream or
play," she says. "For me, I
learned how other communities
worked, instead of just West
Bloomfield. On my birthday, my
group threw a huge surprise par-
ty for me. They liked having role
models from other parts of the
world.
"I think it was helpful that the
two communities had contact
with each other." ❑

Remembering
Judge Shepherd

When leukemia forced John Shep-
herd into an early retirement, the
Michigan Court of Appeals judge
embarked on a self-improvement
program.
After stepping down from the
bench in October 1994, Judge
Shepherd learned to work with
computers and began to enrich his
knowledge of economics and Ju-
daism.

He told his wife Sandy if it
weren't for the circumstances of
his illness, he would have really
enjoyed his studies.
Judge Shepherd died on Aug.
12. He was 60.
Friends, relatives and col-
leagues remember the judge for
his love of teaching, passion for
law and strong desire to work for
the betterment of the Jewish com-
munity and the community at
large.
"I think he would want to be re-
membered for his respect of the
law and his contributions to the
judicial profession," said close
friend Richard Lobenthal, Michi-
gan regional director of the Anti-
Defamation League. "He had an
incredibly strong sense of family.
Next to family, his strongest at-
tachment was to the law.
"John would also want to be
_ known as. a good Jew. By that I
