"Relaxed dining in a pleasant, airy atmosphere, good smiling
service and good food."... Danny Raskin, The Jewish News

Paul Borman, American ORT
President, and David Hermelin,
World ORT Union President,
and past president of American
ORT, recently traveled to Rus-
sia to attend ceremonies dedi-
cating the ORT Technology
Center at the Jewish State
School in St. Petersburg. The
event marked ORT's return af-
ter 115 years to the city where it
was founded in 1880.
Also attending were other
leaders of American ORT,
Women's American ORT and the
World ORT Union. They were
joined by the Russian Minister
of Education, the head of the St.
Petersburg Department of Edu-
cation and by Marc de Gunzburg,
direct descendent of Baron Ho-
race de Gunzburg, a founder of
ORT and its first president.
The ORT program in St. Pe-
tersburg accommodates 300 stu-
dents. In addition to general
subjects, students are offered
comprehensive courses in com-
puter skills, multimedia tech-
nology, Hebrew and Jewish
history and culture. Evening
classes and an Ulpan are held for
parents. The St. Petersburg mu-
nicipality has contributed the
building, furniture and infra-
structure for the laboratories,
workshops and classrooms.
American ORT and Women's
American ORT have provided
funding for state-of-the-art, high-
tech equipment, as well as train-
ing programs for teachers.
This new school is part of the
global network of ORT vocation-
al/technical schools and pro-
grams which educate more than
250,000 youngsters and adults
in over 60 countries throughout
the world, including Israel and
the United States.
