NAME: Freddy Kahle
TEAMS: Albion College varsity
football team and a former mem-
ber of West Bloomfield High
School's football and wrestling
teams
DEED: Kahle, 19, was the only
Jewish football player on Albion's
team last year. He is a 6-foot,
240-pound defensive tackle, who
is entering his sophomore year.
Kahle admits he has answered
many curious questions about
his religion. However, he has
never experienced any animos-
ity from fellow students or pro-
fessors. Last December, Albion
won the 1994 Division III na-
tional championship by beating
Washington & Jefferson Uni-
versity from Washington, Pa. in
the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl.
Several universities and col-
leges recruited Kahle, but he
says he chose Albion because
"they had the best football team
and academic curriculum." He
is focusing his studies on histo-
ry and physical therapy.
To stay in shape during the
summer, Albion's No. 59 works
out with local football trainer Jim
Brown. Kahle runs every day,
lifts weights and does condition-
ing exercises three times a week.
Albion's football training camp
begins Aug. 14 and runs for two
weeks. The team will practice
twice a day for 2-3 hours, scrim-
mage, weight train and partici-
pate in running, hitting and
blocking drills.
Their first game is Sept. 2
against Willington (Ohio) at
home.
THE SKINNY: His junior and se-
nior years at West Bloomfield,
Kahle started every game at of-
fensive tackle. During his senior
year, his coaches put him in as a
defensive tackle as well.
Kahle won numerous football
awards during his final high
school season.
Kahle wrestled in the heavy-
weight division at 218 pounds.
His record as a senior captain
was 28-8. That same year, his
team lost in the finals of the
Class A Regionals to the even-
tual state champion, Warren-
Lincoln. West Bloomfield won
the district wrestling champi-
onship during Kahle's sopho-
more and senior years.
Kahle admits wrestling built
his self-esteem and gave him the
killer instinct that has helped
him in football.
West Bloomfield presented
Kahle with a scholar-athlete
award for his outstanding sports
and academic performances. He
graduated with a 3.15 G.P.A.
Kahle says he has gotten the best
grades in high school and college
when he has participated in
sports because he is "just all-
around more focused."
QUOTE: "High school and college
athletics have given me more
self-confidence, and they have
been the best experiences of my
life so far," said Kahle. "It is an
honor and a privilege to have
been part of Albion's national
championship team, and I can-
not wait for this year's season to
start."
