1502; with Ponce again when he
sailed westward to Puerto Rico
in quest of gold in 1508; and
again in 1513 when Ponce un-
dertook the first of his futile
searches for the mythical foun-
tain.
Documented Jewish history in
Florida does not begin for anoth-
er two centuries, according to the
museum archives. In 1763,
Sephardic Jews made their first
peimanent settlement in Flori-
da. They had fled New Orleans,
when that city had fallen from
French hands to Spanish; and
they found sanctuary in Florida,
when the British wrested control
of the state from Spanish rule.
By 1821, when Spain (which
had regained Florida) finally ced-
ed possession of the state to the
United States, Jews could
breathe freely the pure sea air-
which swept_the Florida penin-
sula from the Gulf of Mexico and
the Atlantic Ocean. The heavy
hand of the Inquisition was lift-
ed, for all time—although a
home-grown Ku Klux Klan and
bone-deep anti-Semitism would
persist at least until 1945, the
close of the period portrayed in
the major museum exhibit.
The museum building is
housed in what was formerly
Congregation Beth Jacob. The ar-
chitect was a congregant, Henry
Hohauser. The original structure
contained 80 stained glass win-
dows, a lofty sanctary topped by
a copper dome, a marble bimah
and a number of Art Deco
elements of the period (the
synagogue was dedicated in
1936), like the chandeliers and
sconces.
All of these features have been
incorporated into the renovated
museum structure. And that area
of Miami Beach — south of Lin-
coln Road — is now the very
trendy Art Deco District, with a
spot earned on the National Reg-
ister of Historic Places.
Visitors who make much of the
rectangular, Bauhaus-inspired
shapes of the houses and hotels
of the District — it's now known
as "SoBe," or the Soho of the
South — can saunter its palm
free-lined streets, buy overpriced
trinkets in its shops, sip Cuba Li-
bres at its outdoor cafes.
The big show on Miami Beach
history at the museum will recall
to visitors a less happy time for
Art Deco inhabitants, when their
neighborhood was, in fact, a ghet-
to, and Jews did not go beyond its
boundaries. They simply were not
allowed to rent or buy property
north of the invisible frontier at
Lincoln Road.
The racism of the 1913-45 pe-
riod no longer exists — except,
massively and substantially,
against black African Americans
and dark-skinned Hispanic
Americans. Lighter-skinned
Cuban Americans, living mainly
