The first meeting, held June 15,
served to jump- start an agen-
da for upcoming sessions.
Theresa Fulgenzi, director of
health-club sports and fitness at
the JCC, will lead the group with
members of the Jewish and gen-
eral community. It aims to cou-
ple information and compassion
with physical activity, like swim-
ming and range-of-motion exer-
cises.
In the U.S., 300,000
people have MS.
The next meeting will be held
in early July. The group, though
based at the JCC, is self-funded
and operates independently. It
is recognized by the Multiple
Sclerosis Society. For more in-
formation, call Ms. Fulgenzi at
(810) 661-7691. ❑

Bloomfield once asked his
doctor if multiple sclerosis
is a Jewish disease. So
many Jews, it seemed to him, at-
tended MS support groups. No,
the doctor answered. Members
of the tribe just like to seek help
in numbers.
The problem: The closest MS
group met in Rochester, miles
away from Mr. Ceresnie and his
wife, Beverly, who suffers from
the degenerative condition af-
fecting her central nervous sys-
tem.
In the United States, an esti-
mated 300,000 people have MS.
It generally strikes younger
adults and often leads to partial
or full paralysis.
"You almost feel alone in the
world," Mr. Ceresnie says. "Your
life changes in many ways."
When the Jewish Communi-
ty Center in West Bloomfield be-
came the site of an MS support
group last month, the Ceresnies
