an Juan, the lively capital
of Puerto Rico, is one of the
best known destinations in
the Caribbean. But Puerto
Ricans know there is much more
to their island than its cos-
mopolitan capital. There are
dense forests and lush valleys, se-
cluded beaches, quiet towns with
their own special charm.
"Out on the island" is what the
natives call the area beyond San
Juan. Because Puerto Rico is a
relatively small island, even a
journey clear over to the other
coast can be easily made.
That's why, on a recent visit, I
decided to explore Puerto Rico's
tranquil southwest coast. It would
be a chance to experience its
beauty and special ambiance —
and also to visit the only Jewish-
owned resort hotel in this area.
The Copamarina Beach Resort
is well known to members of
Temple Beth Shalom, the Reform
congregation in San Juan. Its
owner, Arnold Benus, is a long
time member of Beth Shalom;
and many congregants have en-
joyed visits to this hotel near the
town of Guanica.
A daily shuttle service between
the Regency in San Juan and the
Copamarina, which are both
owned by Mr. Benus, makes it
easy for tourists without cars to
travel across the island.
Leaving from the Regency in
mid-afternoon, we traveled in
style during our two-and-a-half
hour ride across the island. Our
luxury van was equipped with re-
clining chairs, soft music, even a

VCR, and wide picture windows.
As we got closer to our desti-
nation, the windows afforded a
view of mountain ranges and
dense forest area.
We turned onto a road with a
view of the sea on one side, and
mountains on the other. In the
forested area we caught a glimpse
of brightly colored birds soaring
through the sky. We seemed to
have entered a tropical paradise.
"We're in a unique spot be-
cause we're right in the middle of
the Dry Forest of Guanica," said
Mr. Benus, the personable own-
er, whom I met soon after we ar-
rived at the hotel. The lush forest
area we had passed through on
our ride, he explained, was part
of a protected national park of
16,000 acres.
It is one of 210 forests declared
as international biospheric re-
serves by the United Nations,
and it is a prime attraction for
ecology and nature-minded
tourists. Over 40 native bird
species make their home here, as
well as 60 migratory varieties, in-
cluding a number of endangered
species.
The forest also give Guanica
its ideal climate. Summer or win-
ter, it has very little rain, unlike
San Juan, which has a more dis-
tinct dry and rainy season. Be-
cause this is a valuable forest
protected by law, it will always
be an unspoiled area for nature
lovers to savor.
