ideal for all of them. At the Co-
pamarina, for example, the beau-
ty of nature was the highlight.
Instead of a huge luxury resort
similar to those on the east coast,
this was a cheerful and comfort-
able 70-room property.
My guest room and a balcony
directly overlooking the beach.
The open-air lobby was full of
plants and flowers. Outdoors,
there were 20 acres of beautiful-
ly landscaped gardens full of fruit
trees of all sorts—banana, pa-
paya, guava, and more—with
fruit ripe for the picking.
The beach known as Cana
Gorda was another attraction: a
quiet stretch of sand lined with
palm trees and with an unob-
structed view of the calm sea. A
200-foot pier extended clear out
to the sea. Walking on it, I felt al-
most as if I were on the deck of
an ocean liner.
For water sports enthusiasts,
there were sailfish, ocean kayaks,
scuba equipment and more.
Then, too, there was the Gilli-
gan's Island, an offshore key which
was just a mile away. A quick 10-
minute boat ride whisked us to
this pristine island where we saw
a variety of mangroves and a
beach even more secluded, of
course, than Cana Gorda.
Then, too, there were sight-
seeing highlights on this side of
the island. The city of Ponce, just
20 minutes away, has beautiful-
ly restored Colonial buildings and
a noteworthy art museum.
Nearby, too, was La Parguera,
a fishing village, and the
renowned Phosphorescent Bay,
so named because it is illumi-
nated by fish which seem to glow
in the dark.
But besides the sightseeing
highlights, being "out on the is-
land" offered the chance to sim-
ply relax and savor the abundant
natural beauty and unspoiled
quality of Puerto Rico's southwest
coast.
"People come here to read, to
relax, to soak up the sun and ap-
preciate the forest and the nat-
ural environment," said Mr.
Benus.
Jewish travelers are often sur-
prised and pleased to discover a
Jewish-owned hotel out on the is-
land. Mr. Benus is in fact that
only Jewish hotel owner in the
area. He is a member of Temple
Beth Shalom; his mother, Louisa
Benus, also is a member; and his
son Simon was recently bar mitz-
vah.
A number of Temple Beth
Shalom members have visited
the Copamarina, too, especially
as a weekend getaway from San
Jaun.
Mr. Benus, despite his busy life
owning two hotels, still enjoys
these pleasures whenever he can.
He doesn't take them for granted.
"I fell in love with the area right
away," he says. "When you close
your eyes and dream about an is-
land in the tropics, this is it." ❑
