SEE FOR YOURSELF WHY OUR
SUNDRY DIRMPFIGN[ BRUNCH IS CALLED
THE "SIGNATURE BRUNCH':

Ms. Posner uses the "Rule of
Five." The children know they
need to eat at least five fruits or
vegetables a day before they
choose less nutritious snacks.
When she's serving cake for
dessert, Ms. Posner helps her
boys by serving fruit first. "I let
them fill up on fruit. Then I serve
the cake," she says.
What about healthful,
portable snacks? As a well-sea-
soned "treat mom" for her sons'
baseball teams, Ms. Posner of-
fers healthful suggestions.
Instead of pop or juice drinks,
she recommends boxes of juice
or chocolate milk. "I freeze the
chocolate milk boxes," she says.
"The children love it because it's
partially defrosted and really re-
freshing."

When she's
serving cake for
dessert, Ms. Posner
helps her boys by
serving fruit first.

Ms. Posner also brings bagels
instead of donuts. "The mini-
Lender's bagels are a hit, and
bags of grapes or apple slices or
no-fat pudding are a novel
change."
For baseball families spend-
ing several dinners a week at a
game, Posner suggests a little
pre-planning to avoid the Mc-
Donald's trap.
"It doesn't have to be high-fat
food in order to be fast," she says.
"So find the old picnic basket and
load it with sandwiches, cut veg-
etables, fruit and water."
While summertime means a
relaxed schedule, both Mrs.
Margolin and Ms. Posner make
sure their children eat break-
fast.
"We might spend the entire
day by the pool and eat dinner
out," says Mrs. Margolin. "At
least I know the girls started the
day healthfully because I fixed
breakfast."
Involving the children in food
preparation is a great way to en-
courage them to try new foods,
especially summer fruits and
vegetables. Ms. Posner and her
children enjoy creating fruit
kabobs, making breakfast par-
faits and inventing new blender
shakes. CI
