ed for the eighth annual Berman
Award for Outstanding Profes-
sional Service.
Created by Mandell L. and
Madeleine Berman, the award
will go to a Jewish communal
professional employed by the
Federation or one of its agencies.
The award, which will be pre-
sented at the August meeting of
the Federation's Board of Gover-
nors, is intended to promote and
reward extraordinary profes-
sional service. The Bermans es-
tablished the award through the
Federated Endowment Fund of
the Jewish Federation.
Nominees for the Berman
Award must have demonstrated
the highest professional stan-
dards in their chosen field, made
a contribution to the general good
of the Jewish community and dis-
played leadership and innovation
in their profession.

The Jewish Home for Aged re-
cently held its Annual Volunteer
Recognition Party at the Fleis-
chman Residence/Blumberg
Plaza. This year's theme was
"Our Volunteers are the Hearts
of the Home".
The following individuals were
honored: For 2,000 hours of ser-
vice to the home: Sybil Avison,
Ethel Wasser; auxilian of the
year: Ethel Cohen; youth group
of the year: Green Elementary
School, West Bloomfield; com-
munity group of the year: Jewish
Community Council's Social Ac-
tion Group; youth of the year:
Binjamin Shapiro (age 9) reli-
gious volunteer; volunteer of the
year: Sam Reider.
Also honored were Anna Mick-
el. Hannah Moss, Jewish Home
for Aged auxiliary president, was
inducted into the Michigan Gov-
ernor's Honor Roll; Pearlena
Bodzen, immediate past presi-
dent of Jewish Home for Aged
Auxiliary, was a "Heart of Gold"
recipient for 1995.
