impressed with Ms. Tyler's rock
heritage?
"I wouldn't know Aerosmith if
it hit me in the face," he laughs.
If Silent Fall is a hit, it will add
another notch to Dreyfuss'
bulging bio.
That body of work now in-
cludes credit as a director: He re-
cently directed a production of
Hamlet for the Birmingham The-
atre Company in England.
"It was very difficult, but it
gave me immense pleasure," says
the actor.
Is this a new direction for Mr.
Dreyfuss?
"If I ever direct again," he says,
"I will have to find a new way to
speak to actors. I could have been
more persuasive."
No one had to persuade him to
take on another recent project.
Richard Dreyfuss served as nar-
rator for a papal performance of
Leonard Bernstein's Kaddish.
"The Papal Concert to Corn-
memorate the Holocaust,"
arranged by conductor Gilbert
Levine at the Vatican, and now
out on video and CD, sounded
like a good idea, says Mr. Drey-
fuss. "If Gilbert Levine asks you
to do the Shema in front of the
pope before millions of people,
would you say no?" he laughs.
The concert and its significance
were no laughing matter for the
actor, who was impressed with
the significance of what he had
taken part in.
"On the plane back [from the
concert] it hit me," he says. "This
century has certain business that
needs to be tidied up."
Part of that, says Mr. Dreyfuss,
is "what happened in the war and
what happened with the church,"
and its dereliction of duty during
the Holocaust.
"This [concert] was an ac-
knowledgment:" It was the
church's way of saying, says Mr.
Dreyfuss, that the Holocaust was
an extraordinary event that need-
ed commemoration.
In helping to honor the past,
Mr. Dreyfuss says, he understood
what it meant to play an impor-
tant role in such a historic event.
"I felt," the actor says proudly,
"it was a great honor." Ell
