fifth-grader, blew away the com-
petition at the USTA (United
States Tennis Association) Keat-
ing Brothers Outdoor Spring
Open in Birmingham.
Matz, who attends Lone Pine
Elementary in the Bloomfield
Hills School District, won the boys
12's division without losing a set.
He topped Mark Fleszar 6-1, 6-
2; Anthony Klemptner 6-3, 6-2;
Michael Rizik III (the No. 2 seed)
6-0, 6-0; and Philip Wagner in the
finals 6-3, 6-3.
NATHAN COHEN and his
brother ADAM COHEN each
won 6-2, 6-2 as they led the Birm-
ingham Groves High School boys
tennis team to a 7-1 victory over
Birmingham Seaholm on May 4.
At the time, Seaholm was ranked
No. 8 in Class A.

were earned.
Seaholm won the nightcap 3-1,
but Schultz had a double and he
played well defensively at short-
stop. Schultz had three hits and
one RBI in West Bloomfield's 8-
4 win over Ortonville-Brandon on
May 8.
JUSTIN BRIGHT was one of
West Bloomfield's heroes as the
Lakers won their own four-team
invitational on May 13. Bright
had three hits and he knocked in
two runs in two games as West
Bloomfield blanked Novi 3-0 and
Walled Lake Central 7-0.
ADAM ROSENZWEIG and
Bright each had two hits and an
RBI in West Bloomfield's 16-6 loss
to Walled Lake Western in the
second game of a May 6 double-
header.

JUSTIN ISHBIA of Seaholm
had the top batting average (.571)
among Oakland County prep
baseball players in the latest list-
ings. He also was fourth in RBI
(15).
Ishbia hit a two-run homer and
he drove in three runs in Sea-
holm's 5-4 loss to Lake Orion on
May 3 and he had two hits in Sea-
holm's 11-4 win over Andover on
May 8.

Nathan defeated Mike Spors at
No. 1 singles and Adam topped
Russ Morrow at No. 4 singles.
Also for Groves, the No. 4 dou-
bles team of MARC FIELDS and
ADAM KAPLANSKY beat Rev-
el Gholston and Ben Glime 7-5, 6-
2.

SANDY LEVINE threw a
four-hitter and he struck out
eight as he helped the Groves
baseball team dump Ferndale
3-2 in the second game of a May
12 doubleheader.
DAVID GACH made the most
of his first starts for the Berkley
High School baseball team. The
junior had four hits and a sac-
rifice bunt in the Bears' 6-0, 10-
4 sweep of Madison Heights
Lamphere on May 6.
ROBERT ROTH is hitting .455
with an on-base percentage of .600
for the North Farmington High
School baseball team.
Roth knocked in the go-ahead
run with a sixth-inning single in
North Farmington's 16-6 win over
Plymouth Salem on May 8. For
the game, he had two hits and two
RBI.
On May 12, Roth had two of
North Farmington's four hits in a
3-0 loss to Westland John Glenn.
NIKI BERLIN had three stolen
bases, two hits and two runs for
the Berkley softball team in its 4-
3 win over Hazel Park in the
opener of a May 12 doublehead-
er. Berlin drove in two runs in
Berkley's 14-7 victory in the
nightcap.

MICHAEL BROWN was the
runnerup at No. 4 singles for the
Bloomfield Hills Andover High
School boys tennis squad in the
eight-team Brother Rice Invita-
tional on May 6. Todd Eisner of
Ann Arbor Pioneer beat Brown 6-
4, 6-2 in the title match.
JUSTIN SCHULTZ of West
Bloomfield was sixth in earned
run average (0.87) and seventh in
strikeouts (27) in the latest Oak-
land County high school baseball
leaders list.
Schultz threw a five-hitter with
six strikeouts in West Bloomfield's AMY SIEGEL of the Berkley
7-4 win over Seaholm in the first girls track team finished second
