Cornel West graduated from
Harvard, magna cum laude
(1973), received his master's and
doctorate at Princeton (1980),
where he went on to head the De-
partment of Afro-American Stud-
ies. He has recently moved to
Harvard University and has co-
written a book titled Jews and
Blacks; Let The Healing Begin.
The evening's honorees are ac-
tive community leaders and dis-
tinguished attorneys. Kathleen
McCree Lewis is a partner in the
Detroit office of Dykema Gossett
and is a specialist in appellate lit-
igation. David Baker Lewis is the
founding shareholder and chair-
man of the board of the law firm
of Lewis, White and Clay and
specializes in municipal finance
and municipal bond law.
This award is presented to
lawyers who, through their skills,
influence and dedication, have
demonstrated their profound
commitment to preserving hu-
man rights and our democratic
heritage.

Spring Concert
On Sunday, May 14, the Metro-
politan Youth Symphony will
take the stage at the Macomb
Center for the Performing Arts
to present an afternoon of light
classical and contemporary fa-
vorites.
These young musicians, grades
5-12 and representing the tri-
county area, are divided into
three levels of accomplishment.
At the podium of the Symphony
Orchestra is Alan MacNair, Troy
High School orchestra director
and concertmaster and assistant
director of the Rochester Sym-
phony Orchestra. Richard Piippo,
founder and music directory of
the Fairlane Youth Chamber
Music Guild and artistic director
and conductor for the Dearborn
Summer Arts Festival Orches-
tra, heads up the Concert Or-
chestra. The String Orchestra is
under the direction of Jackque-
line Coleman, department head
and director of the Middle school
music program- at Detroit Coun-
try Day School and Concert
Orchestra Director at Blue Lake
Fine Arts Camp.
