63®
blue Red Sea attract tourists
from around the world.
In all, 21 Mission buses leave
Detroit travelers at three Eilat
hotels: the Princess, King
Solomon and Royal Beach. Anx-
ious to catch their first bit of shut-
eye since Sunday morning,
American time, some Mission-
aires check into their rooms, un-
pack and hit the sack for three
hours of sleep.
Others, like Federation Exec-
utive Vice President Robert
Aronson, take advantage of the
pool and sun, but rest, neverthe-
less.
"I've been on probably 30 mis-
sions and this is the first time rve
ever sat at the pool on the first
day," he says. "Usually, travelers
land in Israel and tour guides will
drive them until they drop."
The mega-mission this year
and Michigan's first mission in
1993 have been co-sponsored by
the Jewish Federation of Metro-
politan Detroit and The Jewish
News. Throughout Israel, the
metro Detroit community has
been recognized for its exuberant
travelers.
At a tree-planting ceremony
Monday evening, the mayor of
Eilat, Gabs Kadosh, accepts a
Michigan flag and thanks the
state's Jews for their interest in
Israel.
He says that in the dry and
crumbling desert soil, Israel con-
tinues with Diaspora Jewry to
fulfill the charge of David Ben-
Gurion: Reclaim the Negev.
"By planting trees," the may-
or tells Detroiters, "you plant
deep roots in the land of Israel."
Before leaving, Missionaires
\, dedicate a permanent plaque at
the site. Only yards away, the
border town of Aqaba in Jordan
begins glowing in the rays of the
setting sun. The red mountains
deepen in hue and Mission lead-
ers remind participants that
months before, near here, Israel
and Jordan signed an accord for
peace.
"This border was once a mine
field," Mayor Kadosh intones over
loudspeakers. "Today, we are
planting a forest."
And the first day continues.
Dinner arrangements might ri-
val a wedding reception, but there
is no Hustle or Chicken Dance.
Instead, the crowd sits down
to eat at the "Ostrich Farm." Set
at the front of cliffs, the outdoor
restaurant features Middle East-
ern cuisine, coffee and live en-
tertainment.
In the middle of it all, flood-
lights pop in an electrical short-
circuit; and the band, in darkness,
stops playing. Not to be thwart-
ed, a group of Missionaires begins
to sing and dance the horah on a
patio under the stars.
Before long, the floodlights
blink back on, the music resumes
and at some point the Mission-
aires return to hotels and call it
a night. ❑
