"I've been on probably 30 mis- sions and this is the first time rve ever sat at the pool on the first day," he says. "Usually, travelers land in Israel and tour guides will drive them until they drop." The mega-mission this year and Michigan's first mission in 1993 have been co-sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Metro- politan Detroit and The Jewish News. Throughout Israel, the metro Detroit community has been recognized for its exuberant travelers. At a tree-planting ceremony Monday evening, the mayor of Eilat, Gabs Kadosh, accepts a Michigan flag and thanks the state's Jews for their interest in Israel. Set at the front of cliffs, the outdoor restaurant features Middle East- ern cuisine, coffee and live en- tertainment. In the middle of it all, flood- lights pop in an electrical short- circuit; and the band, in darkness, stops playing. Not to be thwart- ed, a group of Missionaires begins to sing and dance the horah on a patio under the stars.
