Sts.), Jews were among the pa-
triots meeting here to plan the
colony's future. In 1765, for ex-
ample, the Non-Importation Res-
olutions drawn up to protest the
Stamp Act was signed first by
Matthias Bush, then by David
Franks, Nathan Levy, Barnard
and Michael Gratz, Moses
Mordecai and others whose de-
scendants continue to be promi-
nent in the present-day
Philadelphia Jewish communi-
ty.
In 1783, Rabbi Gershom
Mendez Seixas, the first spiritu-
al leader of Mikveh Israel and an
active supporter of the American
Revolution appeared in the As-
sembly Room of Independence
Hall to protest Prennsylvania's
adopting a religious test for pub-
lic office. A deecendant, Victor
Seixas, was the first (and only)
Jew to win the U.S. national ten-
nis championship, at Forest Hills
in 1954.
In 1752, three of the signatory
of the Non-Importation Resolu-
tions, Nathan Levy and his
cousins, David and Moses
Franks, were instrumental in the
purchase and shipment of the
Liberty Bell, transported from
England (where it had been cast)
to Philadelphia aboard the mer-
chant ship they owned, the Myr-
tilla.
The famous bell, one of the
highlights of a tour of Indepen-
dence Park, is on the south side
of Market St., between 5th and
6th. On its bronze surface is in-
scribed a passage from Leviticus
()OCV , 10): "Proclaim liberty
throughout the land" — a refer-
ence to the early Israelite insti-
tution of the Jubilee, the year
every half-century when Hebrew
slaves were freed and land re-
turned to its original owners.
Kahal Kadosh Mikveh Israel
Cemetery (at 817 Spruce St., be-
tween 8th and 9th), the earliest
communal burial ground of the
Philadelphia Jewish communi-
ty, was established through the
efforts of the same Nathan Levy.
Upon the death of a daughter
in 1738, he appealed to John
Penn, son of William Penn, for
a plot of land for a Jewish ceme-
tery. Penn acceded to Levy's re-
quest. For generations thereafter,
Jews were buried here. The
cemetery is no longer in use, and
visitors must get permission to
enter. Among the gravestones are
those of Haym Salomon, 21 fall-
en soldiers of the Revolution and
Rebecca Gratz.
One of the great beauties of the
day, Rebecca was the subject of a
painting by Thomas Sully which
hangs in. The painting and Re-
becca's own stature, both in lit-
erary circles (she was a friend of
Washington Irving) and as a pio-
neer in Jewish education, were be-
lieved to have inspired Sir Walter
Scott to use her as the model for
Rebecca, the Jewish heroine of his
best-known novel, Ivanhoe. 1
