Elfreth is between Arch and
Race; one block distant, on the
north side of Cherry St., between
Second and Third, is the marker
indicating the earliest site of Ka-
hal Kadosh Mikveh Israel Syna-
gogue, founded in 1740 and the
second oldest in the U.S. (after
Shearith Israel, the Spanish-Por-
tuguese Synagogue, in New
York).
When the Mikveh Israel con-
gregation had difficulty meeting
the cost of building the syna-
gogue, a number of prominent,
non-Jewish Philadelphians,
members of nearby Christ
Church, pitched in. Among them
were Benjamin Franklin, Charles
Biddle and David Rittenhouse,
after whom Rittenhouse Sq. is
named.
Among the early members of
Mikveh Israel were Revolution-
ary War financiers Haym
Solomon and Isaac Moses.
The walking tour continues an
block to 44 N. 4th St. — In-
dependence Mall East — the
present site of Mikveh Israel and
the adjoining National Museum
of American Jewish History. The
synagogue still maintains the
Spanish-Portuguese ritual of its
founders on Shabbat and on the
calendar of Jewish holidays.
Under the same roof is the
"museum," the only one in the
country dedicated to chronicling
the American Jewish experience.
Exhibits focus on the participa-
tion of American Jews in the so-
cial, cultural, economic and
politicasl lifer of the nation from
1654 (when the initial group of
23 Sephardic Jews set foot in
New Amsterdam) until the
present.
On Ben-Gurion Walk, direct-
ly in front of the museum is the
white marble statue designed by
Bukki Schwartz, an Israeli sculp-
tor, in commemoration of
Yonatan Netanyahu, leader of
the rescue mission of July 4,
1976, who died in that daring
raid to liberate the Jews held cap-
tive by Arab terrorists in the
Entebbe, Uganda, airport.
On the same site is the Statue
of Religious Liberty, designed by
Moses Ezekiel, one of the earliest
Americxan Jewish sculptors: His
creation was "given to the people
of the United States" by B'nai
B'rith at the time of the centen-
nial celebration of 1876.
The synagogue/museum com-
plex is at the eastern end of In-
dependence National Historical
Park. This area between Markets
and Walnut Sts., 5th and 6th
Sts., is known as "America's most
historic square mile," encom-
passing such major artifacts of
the Revolution as Independence
Hall and the Liberty Bell — with
both of which Philadelphia's Jew-
ish colonists were involved.
More than a decade before the
Declaration of Independence was
'signed at Independence Hall
(Chestnut between 5th and 6th
