Activity
Slow For Now

Industrial activity in Israel de-
creased in the first quarter, re-
flecting a slowdown in exports,
the Manufacturers Association
reported.
The association expects in-
dustrial activity to speed up in
the second half of the year, based
on a survey recently conducted
among 190 companies.

Bronfmans Eye
Spielberg's Studio

The Bronfman family, renowned
Canadian philanthropists, have
taken what analysts are calling
a high-stakes gamble by selling
their share in a chemical giant
and trying to buy a Hollywood
conglomerate that stymied a
Japanese electronics power-
house.
Earlier this month, the Bronf-
mans' Seagrams Co. sold most of
its stock in DuPont Co. back to
the chemical corporation for $8.8
billion.
Seagrams now is deep in ne-
gotiations to obtain 80 percent of
MCA, owned by Matsushita Elec-
tric Industrial Co. Seagrams is
reportedly ready to pay $7 billion
for control of the troubled enter-
tainment company, which Mat-
sushita bought in 1990 for $6.1
billion.
MCA, with $4.6 billion in an-
nual sales, owns record labels,
theme parks, book publishers
and the crown jewel: Universal
Studios, which is responsible for
such blockbusters as E.T., Juras-
sic Park and Schindler's List —
all from Steven Spielberg.
The company has been
wracked by poor earnings and
reports of discord between Hol-
lywood and Tokyo.
Among the many contribu-
> tions from the Bronfmans to Jew-
ish causes was $15 million to
Operation Exodus several years
ago. Edgar M. Bronfman, chair-
man of Seagrams and president
of the World Jewish Congress, is
believed to be the largest bene-
factor of AIPAC.
The Bronfman family has a
controlling 36 percent stake in
Seagrams. The beverage giant
will keep 8.2 million shares of Du
Pont, worth about $500 million.
Seagrams bought its Du Pont
stake in 1981 for $3 billion.
That stake gave the Bronf-
mans cash and clout. Last
month, lobbying by the Bronf-
man family was seen as the first
strike in an effort that led Pres-
ident Clinton to cancel a $1
lion deal between a Du Pont
/-- subsidiary, Conoco, and Iran to
develop offshore oil fields in the
Persian Gulf.
