some from yeshivas I never heard

But he is more interested in in-
vesting in the local Jewish com-
munity, the place where he grew
up and where he raised his chil-
dren.
His link with Hillel is a little
more personal. His daughter,
Lauren, is a former Hillel board
member and her two children at-
tended the school. He also likes
the idea of giving children a place
to learn.
"I want to catch them young,"
he said. "Imbue them with the
merits and the fine traditions of
Judaism. Let them be Jews from
the start and they will stay Jews

cards, Mr. Kogan plans to move
onto his next project: funding a
building to be named for Max

Much of his philanthropy is
done through the Kogan Foun-
dation, a private trust. He also
has a philanthropic trust, also
known as an advised trust, ad-
ministered by the United Jewish
Foundation. The money for the
Hillel donation was to come from
both sources.
"I am not a particularly reli-
gious man. I do not believe in the
mumbo jumbo," Mr. Kogan said.
"But I am a very devoted Jew to
my people, very devoted.
"I happen to believe that we
are the best people on Earth and
I want us to survive, not for 100
years, not for 500 years. I want
us to survive in perpetuity." LI
