New Techniques
For Grandparents
JENNIFER FINER STAFF WRITER
ecently a first-time grand-
parent, Dr. Ralph Cash, a
well-known pediatrician
and advice columnist,
wants to share his wealth of
knowledge with his grandchild
without offending the new par-
ents.
The doctor also ]mows he is not
the only grandparent who wants
to be a positive influence on a
grandchild without "being a butt-
insky."
"We as grandparents come to
the role without preparation," he
said. "Many of us have grown up
without grandparents of our own.
It's difficult to offer advice or help
without our children resenting it.
Advising in a tactful and sup-
portive way doesn't challenge the
autonomy of a young parent."
Being a grandparent in the
1990s raises all kinds of issues,
many of which will be addressed
during the "Creative GRAND-
parenting Symposium II," sched-
uled for Sunday, April 23, at the
Maple-Drake Jewish Communi-
ty Center and Tuesday, April 25,
at the Jimmy Prentis Morris
Building.
Sunday's presentation will fea-
ture Dr. Arthur Kornhaber, pres-
ident of the Foundation for
Grandparenting. The doctor will
talk about strengthening the con-
nection among grandparents,
parents and children.
Following Dr. Kornhaber's pre-
sentation, Sondra Schwartz and
Helena Koenig will lead two sep-
arate discussions.
Ms. Schwartz, the grandpar-
enting coordinator at Wayne
State University's Merrill Palmer
Institute, plans to address ways
to maintain a relationship with
grandchildren after a divorce.
Ms. Koenig is the director of
GRANDTRAVEL, a national or-
ganization which offers vacations
for grandparents and grandchil-
dren. She will discuss ways to en-
joy traveling together.
Dr. Cash is scheduled to speak
on Tuesday. Harlene Appelman's
presentation on "Will my Grand-
children be Jewish?" follows. Ms.
Appleman is the director of
educational services with the
Agency for Jewish Education.
"The seniors generally tell us
what kind of programming they
want to see," said Eileen Polk, the
JCC's adult coordinator.
This year's event is present-
ed by the DeRoy Testamentary
Foundation, the Jewish Com-
munity Center of Metropolitan
Detroit, the Max M. Fisher Jew-
ish Community Foundation and
The Jewish News. I__1
