RABBI DAVID POLISH, 85,

of Evanston, Ill., died April 16.
Rabbi Polish was a leader of the
Central Conference of Ameri-
can Rabbis. He was elected
president of the group at its
82nd annual convention in
1971 and held that position for
two years. He planned the orga-
nization's first rabbinical con-
ference in Jerusalem.
He was the founding rabbi of
Congregation Beth Emet the
Free Synagogue in Evanston
and was its spiritual leader
from 1950 until his retirement
in 1980. He was the founding
president of the Chicago Board
of Rabbis and a founder of the
Association of Reform Zionists
of America.
His most recent book was

Give Us a King: Legal-Religious
Sources of Jewish. Sovereignty,

a study of sovereignty in Jew-
ish thought.
Rabbi Polish is survived by
his wife of 57 years, Aviva
Friedland Polish; daughter, Ju-
dith Shenker of Evanston; son,

Rabbi Daniel Polish of Bloom-
field Hills; six grandchildren.

SYLVIA C. ROSS, 82, of

Southfield, died April 12. Mrs.
Ross was the beloved wife of
the late Victor Ross. She is sur-
vived by her sons and daugh-
ters-in-law, Melvin and Joyce of
Oak Park, Burrell and Marlene
of Albuquerque, N.M., Sydney
and Elizabeth of Bloomfield
Hills; daughter, Johanne
Robinson of South Lyon; grand-
children, Gael and John Lind-
land, Amy and Dawn Robinson,
Adam and Shani, Jeffrey and
Kellie, Nathan, Joshua, Victor,
Megan and Freda Ross; three
great-grandchildren; sisters

Abe Litvien of Redwood City,

MOLLY F. SHAPIRO, 100, of

Southfield, died April 13. She
is survived by her daughters,

Florence Harwood of Oak Park;

Linda Simon; great-grandchil-
dren, Stefani Turken Wein-
berg, Eric Turken, Todd Simon.

PHILIP SCHNEIDER, 78, of

Boca Raton, Fla., died April 17.
Mr. Schneider was the co-
founder and owner of Schneider
Sport Shops. Mr. Schneider
was the dear brother of the late
Sam Schneider, the late Toby
Schneider and the late Betty
Resnick. He is survived by his
wife, Mickey; daughter and
son-in-law, Annette and Martin
Newman of West Bloomfield;
son, Steven of Royal Oak;
grandchildren, Deirdre, David
and Sara Newman; sisters and
brother-in-law, Leah Roe, Ade-
line and Sidney Weinberg;
brothers and sisters-in-law,
Raymond and Faye, Irving and
Rosalyn. Interment at Adat
Shalom Memorial Park.

ROSABETH LEBSTER
SCHUPACK, 74 of Flint, died

April 15. Her parents were the
first Jewish family to settle in
Flint and they helped in the
founding of Flint's first syna-
gogue. Mrs. Schupack was a
past president of Temple Beth
El Sisterhood, district president
of the National Federation of
Temple Sisterhoods. She served
on the Temple Beth El board of
directors. She volunteered at
the Flint Institute of Arts and
was an artist and quilt maker
whose work was displayed in
galleries across the state.
Mrs. Schupack is survived by
her husband, Emil; sons and
daughters-in-law, David and
Susan of Flint, Dore and Karen
of Tulsa, Okla.; daughter, Anne
of San Diego; six grandchildren;
brother and sister-in-law, Mar-
cus and Rosyln Lebster of Mar-
gate, Fla. She was preceded in
death by her son, Allan, and
sister, Laura Livingston.
Services were held at Temple
Beth El in Flint with burial at
Cloverhill Cemetery in Birm-
ingham. Contributions may be
made to the Lebster Endow-
ment Fund of the Flint Jewish
Federation or Planned Parent-
hood. Arrangements by the
Brown Funeral Home in Flint.

ADAM LOUIS SCHUSTER,

23, formerly of Southfield of
Flint, died April 10 in El Cen-
tro, Calif. Mr. Schuster atended
Michigan State University and
was employed by Skelly & Loy
of Monroeville, Pa., as an ar-
chaelogist. He is survived by
his mother, Linda Hirsch of
Flint; father, Alan Schuster of
Detroit; brother Aric Schuster
of Ann Arbor; grandparents,
Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Samuels
of Boca Grande, Fla., Leah
Schuster of Southfield. He was
preceded in death by his grand-
mother, Sandra Samuels, and
grandfather, Arthur Schuster.
Arrangements were made by
the Swartz Funeral Home,
1225 West Hill Road, Flint;
burial was in Evergreen Ceme-
tery in Grand Blanc. Contribu-

BETTY SEIGLE, 64, of West

Bloomfield, died April 16. Mrs.
Seigle was a member of ORT,
the Detroit Symphony, Detroit
Art Institute and Knollwood
Country Club. She is survived
by her husband, Robert; sons
and daughters-in-law, Steven
and Susie of West Bloomfield,
Jeffrey and Dian of Raleigh,
N.C.; daughter and son-in-law,
Julie and Arthur Rott of West
Bloomfield; grandchildren, Bar-
rie, Jake, Alec, Adam and Erik

brother and sister-in-law, Dr.
