Next stop: the Jerusalem head-
quarters of Hebrew Union Col-
lege with its striking architecture.
Inside the spacious grounds,
set back from the street, I felt I'd
wandered into an elegant Span-
ish villa, complete with central
courtyard, balconies, arches and
lush gardens with palm trees and
flower beds.
Back on the street again, I
passed the modern complex, King
David's Court, with its offices and
shops. Across the street at #20
was a weathered old synagogue,
Heichal Baruch. New and old, the
secular and the sacred, side by
side, typifying one of the contrasts
of Jerusalem itself.
I continued walking until I
reached the foot of King David
Street where the walls of the Old
City were clearly visible. Nearby
was a newly opened modest bed
and breakfast hotel, Mmdmilla's.
The hotel scene on King David
Street will be even more varied
when Hilton International opens
opposite the Old City walls in fall
1996.
Reversing direction, I went back
up King David Street, enjoying the
animated street scenes. I saved
for my last stop, the landmark
stone building, the Jerusalem In-
ternational YMCA, with its 152
foot high central tower.
The amenities of this unusual
YMCA include an outdoor court-
yard and cafe and an ornate indoor
lobby with Oriental rugs and vault-
ed ceiling. This Y is actually a three-
star hotel, the Three Arches, with
56 newly renovated rooms.
It also has an observation tow-
er with a spectacular view of the
city and environs. Reservations
clerk Najat Rofa offered to take
me to the top. First, we rode up
in the elevator; and when it
stopped, we still climbed one
more flight of winding stairs to
reach our destination.
From every direction, there
was a panoramic vista, with
maps posted at several spots on
outdoor decks. From one position,
we saw modern Jerusalem. From
another, we saw the walls of the
Old City, east Jerusalem, and
Mount Scopus.
Then, stepping back into the
tower and out onto another small
lookout, we were facing the towns
beyond Jerusalem. Ms. Rofa, a
native of the city, pointed out Beit
Safafa, an Arab town, and Rom-
ena, a Jewish town. Both had the
Judan hills as backdrop.
From another vantage point,
we had a view of the handsome
facade of the King David Hotel.
We could also see all of King
David Street and beyond.
Seeing it from on high, with
the entire city as background,
was a fitting finale to my excur-
sion — a visual reminder of the
beauty of distinctive street
and the city it typifies. ❑
