PASSOVER 1995

WE

Some come here to follow a
strict diet regime to lose weight.
Some come to relax and recharge
their batteries. The only stress is
on informality, and many guests
spend much of their time in
lounging robes between pool and
Jacuzzi and sauna and the din-
ing room. There is not a necktie
in sight.
There are lectures of interest
for those who wish, and trips
around the neighborhood which
is drenched in history and mys-
tic spirit; but the program is not
structured. One of the visits, in-
cidentally, is to the nearby tomb
of the miracle rabbi, Yuonatan
Ben Uziel.-Legend, supported by
experience, has it that one who
visits the grave in proper mood,
will be wed within a year.
Guests at Mizpeh Hayamim
will be impressed with the aes-
thetic atmosphere, marked by a
profusion of greenery indoors, fea-
turing also two atriums with ex-
otic local plants. The tall palm
tree at the center is already push-
ing against the roof. The swim-
ming pool is surrounded by no
less than 33 large potted plants.
There are no ashtrays. The
diet is strictly vegetarian, but for
those who wish it, the desserts
are rich and tempting. Dr. Jarus
would not have approved.
For Israelis in the know,
Mizpeh Hayamim is the "in"
place. It draws Tel Aviv's yup-
pies. The list of celebrities who
have relaxed here is long, but ho-
tel manager Josh Avin hastens
to add that to him and the staff
every guest is a celebrity. Josh
is a sabra who studied profes-
sional hotel management in the
United States. He served with
such hostelries as the Konover
in Miami Beach and the Mon-
drian in Hollywood. he came
back to Israel to manage the
Dan Caesarea and two years ago
took over Mizpeh Hayamim.
A recent addition to the
grounds is the art gallery and
workshop, where Sami Samaand
and his associates, Max and Hay-
im, produce pottery, ceramics,
jewelry, silvercraft and the like.
Hotel guests have opportunity
here to explore their own possi-
bly latent artistic talents, as part
of their experience at Mizpeh
Hayamim.
The ample grounds are the
source also of much of the fruit
and vegetables and cheeses con-
sumed here. There are only 80
rooms, assuring an atmosphere
of intimacy.
In his day, Dr. Jarus never ad-
vertised. Information about the
place was spread by word of
mouth, and guests were plenti-
ful. Even today, advertising is
minimal; and so Mizpeh
Hayamim is one of the secret in-
places of the Israelis. On day
American tourists will discover
it.Hopefully, they will not spoil
it. ❑
