Musical Focuses
On King David

A musical production on the life
dicing David will be one of the
events of the Jerusalem 3000 cel-
ebrations.
Composer Alan Menken and
librettist Tim Rice, the award-
winning team that created Dis-
ney's Aladdin and Beauty and the
Beast, will create the musical.
The production will be the
largest ever mounted in Israel,
according to the show's produc-
er, Andre Djaoui. The debut per-
formance is scheduled to take
place one year from now at
Jerusalem's Sultan's Pool in front
of an audience of 6,000.
The production will then go on
the road to 22 of the world's
largest stages, culminating with
runs on Broadway and in Lon-
don's West End.

Art Focus
In Israel

More than 750 Israeli artists re-
cently participated in Art Focus,
a campaign to heighten interna-
tional awareness and exposure
to the contemporary art scene.
Organized by Yona Fischer, se-
nior curator emeritus at the Is-
rael Museum, Art Focus featured
140 exhibition spaces reflecting
10 years of Israeli painting, sculp-
ture, photography, video and in-
stallations.
Curators and directors from
among the world's leading mu-
seums and galleries were invited
to the event. Among those repre-
sented were the Tate Gallery, the
Smithsonian Museum and the
Jeu De Paume Museum. Brahim
Alasi, director of exhibitions at
the Institut du Monde Arabe in
Paris, visited Israel for the first
time as part of the event.

Center Wins
Rechter Prize

Beit Gabriel, the new cultural
center on the southern shore
of the Sea of Galilee, recently
won Israel's most important
award for architecture, the
Rechter Prize.
Designed by Ulrik Plesner and
Dan Weinman, the center opened
its doors in May 1993.
Beit Gabriel's view and serene
setting are products of a merging
of architecture and landscape.
The center hosts a plethora of lo-
cal cultural events including mu-
sic, dance and cinema, as well as
international conferences.
