There is even low-fat Michigan
champagne vinaigrette salad
dressing with the champagne
cooked out.
An outside porch that extends
from end to end at Mitch's is for
looks only ... not wide enough to
put tables and chairs.
Specials that are run daily at
Mitch's can also be gotten at any
time ... like veal parmesan,
$14.95.
Dinners come with a choice of
starch (potato, rice or pasta), veg-
etable and salad.
There's also chili, bar-b-q
chicken, stir frys, salads and all
the things that made Mitch's a
popular place to go.
Dinners for two are half slab
of ribs and half lemon herb baked
chicken or a full slab of ribs with
Greek salad and choice of potato
or spaghetti, $19.95.
The desserts are in a class of
their own ... There is no set
menu for them ... and so many
that a separate page of weekly
specials is devoted solely to these
culinary delights by Josef ... He
will prepare any of them if given
24 hours notice ... Josef also

Mitch's building,
food have changed.

makes special cakes for birth-
days, weddings, themes, etc.
Although Ella doesn't make
the rice pudding anymore, her
recipe is still used down to the fi-
nal touch and ingredient ... It
seems to be one of the few links
in dining left from the old Mitch's,
but the change is very obviously
for the good ... Greek salads are
still away up there, 500 served
weekly, to go along with the ribs
and pizza standbys from yester-
years.
Back in the '60s, Tony used to
be in the kitchen, bartend, etc. ...
This was when he and Bill, who
now owns Mitch's II, were part-
ners ... Tony was his own chef,
did the entire menu of ribs, chick-
en, pizza, some veals and steaks
plus making soups, sauces and
dressings.
His 26-year-old daughter, Jen-
nifer, may not be in the business
with Mom and Dad, but she is fol-
lowing Pop's culinary ways ...
Jennifer graduated from Syra-
cuse in journalism, found her love
for cooking to be stronger and
went to the Culinary Institute in
Hyde Park, N.Y. . . . She worked
at restaurants in San Francisco
and is back in school to graduate
this July . . . Son, Kerry 23, is at
the restaurant every day.
If you were one of the Mitch's
stalwarts of yesteryears, the
shock is not when you see linen
napkins ... but beautifully-pat-
terned silverware ... and dishes
imported from England.
Mitch's has grown with the
times ... and become a dining

spot for many diversified tastes
... However, as the saying goes,
you can take the man out of the
country but you can't take the
country out of the man.
Thankfully, the character that
has always been Mitch's is still
there.
GET WELL wishes ... to
Mickey Goodman ... recuperat-
ing after surgery at Henry Ford
Hospital.
NEW OWNERSHIP by Vi-
tali Lobanov, with General Man-
ager Ernie Malazo, at Russian
Bear in Orchard Mall, Orchard
Lake Road north of 15, could
make quite a big difference.
FOLKS WON'T recognize the
former Sultan's on Orchard Lake
Road and 14 ... It's now opened
as Steve's Back Room, with Mid-
dle Eastern food considered by
many among the best.
CONGRATS ... to Lois and
Ed Glick ... on their 32nd an-
niversary ... to her sister Carol
and Shel Klaiman ... on their
26th anniversary ... Lois and
Carol are the daughters of Mar-
ian Goldman.
CHICKEN CREPES are the
new gourmet feature on Peter
Bershaj's Gateway Deli menu at
Harvard Row, 11 Mile and
Lahser ... The former Larco's
cook also fills the crepes with
sauteed green peppers, onions
and mushrooms, and tops them
with a white sauce.
HOW GOOD a detective are
you? ... Folks find out while hav-
ing a four-course meal at Nifty
Norman's on S. Commerce in
Walled Lake ... Its Mystery Din-
ner Theatre and art exhibit, $35,
is March 25 ... 7 to 8 p.m. hors
d'oeuvres followed by dinner ...
Art in the gallery where the sto-
ry takes place will be for sale.
BILLY ROSE adds the east
side to his west side weekly ap-
pearance ... Plus O'Mara's Fri-
day and Saturday evenings,
Billy's fine quartet is now every
Tuesday downstairs for dancing
at Arriva Italia on E. 12 Mile, be-
tween Mound and Van Dyke.
THIRD ANNUAL Oscar
Night by Excalibur, Franklin at
12 Mile and Northwestern, is
March 27 from 7:30 p.m. on ...
$60 per person for a five-course
dinner, wines and voting in its
Oscar Derby with the telecast on
a giant TV screen ... Reserva-
tions went fast for the first two.
AN OPPOSITE in dining is
at Ernesto's in Plymouth... Ex-
ecutive Chef Ernie DeMichele
does no cooking in butter unless
it is asked for.
20 REGIONS of Italy are vis-
ited with the six-course dinners
each Wednesday of the month, 7
p.m., at Andiamo Banquet Cen-
ter, E. 14 Mile between Mound
and Van Dyke . . . $39.95 per per-
son includes tax, tip and wine
representative of the region ...
Also Simone Vitale and his or-
chestra gives out music for lis-
tening and dancing. ❑
