Phoebe and Harris Mainster

Congregation Beth Abraham Hil-
lel Moses will present its first an-
nual Humanitarian Award to
Drs. Phoebe and Harris Mainster
at a dinner 6 p.m. April 9.
The Mainsters have devoted
themselves to caring and helping
for nearly 25 years. They have do-
nated their time and energy to
persons in underdeveloped areas
of the world. They also have
served Native Americans in
South Dakota and in Alaska.

Hillel Moses presents
its first annual
Humanitarian Award

Dr. Harris Mainster, a surgeon
in the Detroit area, operates each
day during the six-week missions
and teaches surgical principle
and modern surgical techniques
to the physicians and surgeons
who are care givers in the area.
He also provides instruction to
members of other helping pro-
fessions who work there. Dr.
Phoebe Mainster, who is on the
faculty of the English Depart-
ment at Wayne State Universi-
ty, contributes by teaching
English as a second language.
Dr. Harris Mainster is a past
president of the congregation, a
member of the board of directors
and the Prime Minister's Club of
Israel Bonds. He also is a member
of the boards of the Jewish Com-
munity Center, a past board mem-
ber and supporter of the Hillel Day
School, and the Jewish Theological
Seminary. He has served as pres-
ident of the American Friends of
Hebrew University.
Dr. Phoebe Mainster is a schol-
ar in medieval English literature
and in writing and composition at
Wayne State University. She
serves on the University's Alum-
ni Association's Executive Board,
the board of the University's Cohn-

Jeffrey Klepper

Cantor Jeffrey Klepper will be
Temple Emanu-El's Samuel
Hanburger scholar in residence
this year.
As composer of more than 100
songs, Cantor Klepper has helped
expand the musical language of
the American synagogue, em-
bracing folk, rock, and jazz styles
in his recordings and concerts.
In 1974, Jeff Klepper founded
the Jewish musical group Kol
B'seder with Rabbi Daniel Free-
lander. His compositions can be
heard on six Kol B'seder record-
ings. He has published articles
on Jewish music and given con-
certs, lectures, and workshops
throughout the country.
He has been cantor of Beth
Emet/the Free Synagogue in
Evanston, Ill., since 1982. He
holds a master of arts in music
from northeastern Illinois Uni-
versity.
Cantor Klepper will present `
"Jewish Music: What's Tradition"'
at Shabbat evening services on
Friday, March 17, at 8:15 p.m. On
Sabbath morning, 10:30 a.m., he
will address "Musical Creations
for Contemporary Congrega-
tions." Cantor Klepper also will
conduct a song-leading workshop
at the temple on Shabbat after-
noon.
The public is welcome at three
events; there is no charge.
