Ecumenical Institute
Honors Two Leaders
n April 25, the Ecumenical Institute for Jewish-Christian
Studies will honor two distinguished religious leaders,
Rabbi Richard C. Hertz, rabbi emeritus of Temple Beth
El, and the Reverend Nicholas Hood Sr., minister emeritus of Ply-
mouth United Church of Christ, with the presentation of the sec-
ond annual Dove Award.
The award, given to religious leaders who work to promote "Im-
proving relationships between people of different faiths," pays trib-
ute to two men whose communal activities have reached far beyond
their individual pulpits. Rabbi Hertz is the distinguished professor
of Jewish Studies at the University of Detroit-Mercy, a member of
the board of trustees of Marygrove College, and served as vice pres-
ident of the Jewish Community Council. The Reverend Hood, a for-
mer Detroit City Councilman and a founding member of the
Nicholas Hood
Southern Christian Leadership Conference, is the founder of the
Cyprian Center, a program for developmentally-disabled adults,
and President of the Hannan Memorial Foundation. The 1995 Dove,
whose theme is "Peace! Let It Begin With Me," will recognize their
unique contributions in an evening dedicated to promoting reli-
gious and cultural understanding and respect.
Chairing this year's event are two community leaders, Sharkey
Haddad and Irving Nusbaum. Mr. Haddad, the community liaison specialist for West Bloomfield School District, is the former direc-
tor of the Chaldean Federation of America. His community involvement includes serving as co-chairman of the Southfield-Lathrup Mul-
ticultural Coalition and membership on the Race Relations Committee of New Detroit, Inc. Irving Nusbaum, owner of New York
Carpet World, is past president of Detroit Men's ORT and a past chairman of the finance committee of the Jewish Home for Aged.
Mr. Nusbaum serves on the boards of the Southfield Federation for the Arts, the Hospice of Southeastern Michigan and Jewish Fam-
ily Service where he is also the co-chairman of the "Windows" Family Violence Endowment Fund. Mr. Haddad and Mr. Nusbaum
serve on the board of trustees of the Ecumenical Institute.
The presentation of the Dove Award is reflective of both the Institute's symbol and its mission. The dove was chosen to represent the
work of the Institute because of its special meaning to both Christians and Jews as a representation of the end of hostility and the
restoration of harmony. It underscores the Institute' s purpose — to foster greater understanding between Jews and Christians, and
to provide opportunities for study and discussion of issues that often have been the sources of tensions and hostilities between Chris-
tians and Jews.
