Center Wins
Rechter Prize

Beit Gabriel, the new cultural
center on the southern shore
of the Sea of Galilee, recently
won Israel's most important
award for architecture, the
Rechter Prize.
Designed by Ulrik Plesner
and Dan Weinman, the center
opened its doors in May 1993.
Beit Gabriel's view and serene
setting are products of a merg-
ing of architecture and land-
scape. The center hosts a
plethora of local cultural events
including music, dance and cin-
ema, as well as international
conferences.

A musical production on the life
of King David will be one of the
events of the Jerusalem 3000 cel-
ebrations.
Composer Alan Menken and
librettist Tim Rice, the award-
winning team that created Dis-
ney's Aladdin and Beauty and
the Beast, will create the musi-
cal.
The production will be the
largest ever mounted in Israel,
according to the show's produc-
er, Andre Djaoui. The debut per-
formance is scheduled to take
place one year from now at
Jerusalem's Sultan's Pool in
front of an audience of 6,000.
The production will then go on
the road to 22 of the world's
largest stages, culminating with
runs on Broadway and in Lon-
don's West End.
