Teens Face
A Challenge
At a time when Jewish commu-
nities all over the world are
struggling to hold the allegiance
of their youth, the YM-YVVHA of
Bergen County, N.J., has devised
a summer program called "The
Israel Challenge," which has
been designed specifically to ap-
peal to the most demanding
youngsters, those boys and girls
who are varsity-level athletes or
serious outdoorsmen.
The Challenge has two sepa-
rate programs to choose from:
the Israeli Sports Challenge,
called the single most innovative
sports program in Israel in the
last 10 years, and the Wilderness
Challenge, which features a
week-long sojourn in Sinai, home
of Israel's most dramatic scenery.
Each group of teen-agers be-
tween 15 to 17 will spend five
weeks (Sunday, June 25 to Mon-
day, July 31) in Israel, making
connections with Israeli and
American Jewish youngsters.
ISC boys and girls will be ac-
companied by male and female
Jewish coaches in basketball,
tennis, swimming, volleyball,
and soccer. Besides working with
their American coaches, partici-
pants will also spend 10 days at
training camp in Wingate Insti-
tute, Israel's premier sports-
training facility.
The touring aspect of the Chal-
lenge is designed with athletic
youngsters in mind and focuses
on outdoor adventure. Climbing,
water-skiing, rafting, and rap-
pelling are included, as the par-
ticipants travel all over the
Jewish state and absorb the sig-
nificance of a 2000-year-old
dream.
For information, a color
brochures, and names of alum-
ni, contact Herb Levine, Israel
Challenge Director at the YM-
YWHA of Bergen County, 605
Pascack Road, Washington
Township, NJ 07675.
