BILLY BERRIS brought a gold
medal home with him from a re-
cent trip to Brazil. The White
Lake Township resident won the
gold by helping the United States
men's basketball team capture
the championship in the second
annual Brazilian Maccabi Mas-
ters Games.

Billy Berris takes a break in Brazil.

Six teams — two from San
Paolo (Brazil) and one each from
Rio De Janeiro (Brazil), the Unit-
ed States, Israel and Uruguay —
competed over four days. Berris,
44, was the captain of the eight-
player U.S. squad, which was the
smallest in the field but quite
quick.
Six-foot-five BART 'WEINER
from Philadelphia was the tallest
American.
Five of the eight U.S. players,
including Berris, were members
of the American masters team
which earned a bronze medal in
Israel in 1993 in the 14th annu-
al World Maccabiah Games.
Berris, who played basketball
at Detroit Mumford High School
and Wayne State University, is
planning to participate in the Pan
American Maccabiah Games in
December in Argentina.

JODIE ROSENBERG, a fresh-
man at West Bloomfield High
School, is having an outstanding
season with the Blake Acronauts
gymnastics team.
At the 12th annual Buckeye
Classic held Jan. 13-15 at the
Ohio State Fairgrounds, Rosen-
berg finished first in floor exer-
cise (9.15) and bars (8.6), 16th in
vault (8.55) and ninth all-around
(33.55) among 26 gymnasts in the
Level 10 Junior (ages 13-14) di-
vision.
The West Bloomfield resident
qualified for the event finals in
the floor exercise and she placed
fourth (9.125). The 10 highest
scoring gymnasts in both the Lev-
el 10 and Open divisions made it
to the event finals.
The Buckeye Classic is the
largest gymnastics competition
in the world. This year, 1,700
gymnasts from as far away as
Alaska competed in three halls
on six sets of apparatus.
Rosenberg was ninth all-
around (35.375) in the Open Ju-
niors division in the American

More than 700 gymnasts from
across America and Guatemala
competed in this meet.

JENNIFER ROSE and AMY
SIEGEL of Berkley High School
and JEREMY HERTZA of
West Bloomfield High School
were nominated for Michigan
High School Athletic Association
(MHSAA) 1994-95 Scholar-Ath-
lete Awards by their schools.
Rose is Berkley's nominee for
girls track and Siegel for girls
cross country. Hertza earned
West Bloomfield's nod for boys
swimming.
To be eligible for one of the 24
Scholar-Athlete Awards, stu-

imum 3.5 cumulative grade-point
average (on a 4.0 scale). They had
to earn a varsity letter in their
nominated sport before they were
a senior and they must demon-

and community activities.
Two letters of recommendation
and a 500-word essay on how ex-
tracurricular activities have en-
hanced their educational
experience also are required.
Farm Bureau Insurance, un-
derwriter of the Scholar-Athlete
Awards, provides a $1,000 schol-
arship in each of the 24 sports for
which the MHSAA sponsors a
post-season tournament. A record
2,136 students were nominated
this year from 444 schools.

With JEREMY LEWIN and
STEVE SIMON helping lead the
way, the Birmingham Groves
High School wrestling team
clinched the Division III cham-
pionship in the Oakland Activi-
ties Association with a pair of
dual meet victories on Jan. 25.
Groves defeated Ortonville-
Brandon 34-28 and Berkley 48-
13 and finished with a perfect 4-0
record in the division. Brandon
ended up 3-1 and Berkley was 2-
2.
Lewin, who wrestles in the
275-pound weight class, sewed
up the win over Brandon by pin-
ning his opponent in 1:13.
Simon helped get the Falcons
rolling past Berkley by defeating
his foe 20-4 at 106 pounds. In the
112-pound match, Berkley's
AARON KOBERNICK edged
STEVE STEIN of Groves 4-2.
