SPRING

INTO ACTION

WITH NEW

and the Imperial Institute Gal-
leries.
Rosenberg spent one year, be-
ginning in 1914, in South Africa
with his sister. He created nu-
merous paintings there which ap-
parently have been lost. In
October 1915, he returned to
England and enlisted with the
British army. He was sent to
France, where he was assigned
the unenviable task of working
in the trenches.
Rosenberg's works in the last
two years of his life focus, not sur-
prisingly, for the most part on
war. Among his surviving draw-
ings are a self-portrait, with a
curved line atop his helmet which
he describes in an accompanying
letter as "the Germans' front line,
100 yards away."
Among his surviving poems,
written in 1917, is the famous
"Returning We Hear the Larks,"
which includes these lines:
Somber the night is.
And though we have our lives,
we know
What sinister threat lurks
there.
Unlike many of his contempo-
raries (among them Siegfried
Sassoon, who converted to Chris-
tianity), Rosenberg was deeply
interested in and connected to his
heritage. As a child he learned
Hebrew, and he wrote several po-
ems about life as a Jew in the
modern world, as well as a play,
Moses.
Pvt. Isaac Rosenberg died dur-
ing night patrol on April 1, 1918.
By 1975, three biographies of the
artist/poet had appeared. ❑
