played on tables, where
passersby stop to browse
and look at the varied ti-

of books — shelves filled with
them, all carefully arranged by
category.
Tradition. Mysticism. Theol-
ogy. History. Politics. Children's
Literature. There are these sec-
tions and more — enough to keep
even the most avid bibliophile
happily occupied for hours.
But what makes this bookstore
unusual is that all the books are
on Jewish themes or by Jewish
authors — and this is a Jewish
bookstore in Germany.

The owner, Dr. Rachel Sala-
mander, also has special exper-
tise: She has a Ph.D. and is an
author and editor as well as a
book owner.
A display case near the en-

scope of the books available here.
There are books about the Jews
of Munich, about the history of
the Hasburg Jews and about the
Jews of Argentine.

Books on display at Literatur Handlung.

Literatur Handlung is situat-
ed in the heart of Munich, near
C)
the elegant wide boulevard, the
0
Ludwigstrasse. It is the only Jew-
ish bookstore in all of Germany,
m
with a branch in Berlin and an-

other in Vienna. For the Jewish

traveler to Munich, a visit to this
C
bookstore provides a literary trav-

el adventure.

For instance, recently several
C)
C
Jewish tourists from Basel,
Switzerland, stopped in. "They
looked around and were amazed,"
relates Doris Lang, the sales man-
ager. 'They said, There's nothing
like this in Switzerland!"
The two visitors from Boston
z
who came in had a similar reac-
tion. 'They said, There are many

Jewish bookstores in America,

but we never saw one like this —

with so many Jewish booksr ."

"We try to show the whole
range of Judaism, not only reli-

m gious or Orthodox subjects but all

aspects," says Ms. Lang, who ma-
z jored in literature at the univer-

sity of Bonn. Although she's not

bookstore have given her a spe-

em Europe.
And because this is a bookstore
in Germany, there's also a spe-
cial emphasis on books about
German-Jewish issues: A book
about the Jews of Munich and
another titled Frauen in Konzen-
traslagan, about women in the
death camps of Bergen-Belsen
and Ravensbruck, are promi-
nently displayed.
In all, the store carries an es-
timated 7000 titles — in German,
English, Hebrew and Yiddish. All
of them are listed in a general cat-
alogue with yearly supplements
added.
Besides its books, the store also
carries compact discs and cas-
settes of Jewish music, from can-
torial to klezmer. Titles include
"The West End Klezmorim" and
"Odessa Express," featuring both
Yiddish and Klezmer music, and
"The Art of Cantor Josef Rosen-
blatt" and "Jewish Soul Music."
With such an extensive collec-
tion, the store draws a diverse
group of customers. They are
young and old, scholars and stu-
dents, Munich residents and oth-
