CHEDER STORY page 4

dow, but failed to break it. In con-
trast to his previous day's retreat,
he stood there defiantly, verbal-
ly taunting the children. A
teacher came out and held the
young man until the police came.
There was no "fight." The police
Were "obligated" (they said) to is-
sue a ticket to the adult because
the young vandal claimed he was
pushed while being held.
True, the young man turned
out to be a minor. True, the law
— incomprehensibly — seems to
be (according to the officer's state-
ment) that one must not detain
an individual who has hurled a
rock through one's window, be-
cause the act is not a felony, but
"a minor misdemeanor." But does
that give your reporter license to
call our student a "student" but
the vandal (of the same age) a
"child"? Does it give her license
to sensationalize the story, ex-
pand its importance out of all pro-
portion, and leave an impression
on the reader that is the exact re-
verse truth?
The truth is a quiet shul and
school in a quiet neighborhood,
subjected — in an unusual and
rare incident — to a repeat rock-
throwing attack, responded to
the attack in a law-abiding, civ-
il manner. Any responsible news-
paper, Jewish or not, would have
given two inches to the story, and
captioned it "Youth Accused of
Synagogue Vandalism," "Youth
Alleged to Have Broken School
Window."
The most heinous slur of all is
the caption that "Lubavitch" is
the entity facing assault and bat-
tery charges, when the truth is
that the technical ordinance vio-
lations were issued to an indi-
vidi in] at the school. Imagine the
identical incident at the JCC or
any other communal facility,
with staff members responding
properly and responsibly, as did
our teachers? How would you
have written the report, with
praise or condemnation? How
would it have been captioned?

I want to thank you for Ruth
Littmann's Dec. 16 article, "Nev-
er the Same." We were impressed
by the compassion, accuracy and
exposition that her writing pro-
vided. It is, I realize, a painful
subject to read about, but one
that must be presented if any-
thing is to be done-about it. It is
a tragedy of such magnitude that
friends, acquaintances and even
strangers are struck dumb in
their attempts to converse with
the victims of child homicide.
They quickly change the subject
to something less uncomfortable
to discuss.
But discuss it we must. Believe
