Union Bank of Switzerland
(UBS) expects a strong perfor-
mance from the Tel Aviv Stock
Exchange (TASE), the bank's re-
search team said in a recent note.
The note deals specifically with
the major Israeli holding compa-
nies traded on the TASE and in
New York — Africa Israel, Clal
Industries, Clal Israel, Discount
Investment Corporation (DIC),
IDB Development, IDB Holding,
Israel Corporation, Koor, Ampal
and PEC.
It recommends buying shares
in Africa Israel, DIC, Israel Cor-
poration and Koor.
Africa Israel has been the best
earnings performer among the
group in 1994 and has the best

exposure to the Swiss economy,
according to UBS analysts.
However, UBS cautioned that
profits are dependent on contin-
ued house-price inflation, and the
share price may be vulnerable to
pressure from forthcoming share
issues.
Although DIC has suffered
from securities trading losses,
new investments offer optimism,
and the company has solid asset
backing and trade at a discount
to net assets of more than 20 per-
cent, UBS said.
The Israel Corporation should
be a beneficiary from the privati-
zation process, while Koor's at-
tractions are its low rating and
good asset backing, UBS said.

Officials Oppose Trade Agreement

Israel Industry and Trade Min- tion to the limitations the Euro-
ister Micha Harish and Agricul- peans have failed to remove on Is-
ture Minister Ya'acov Tsur have raeli exports.
These include the EU's refusal
announced their opposition to Is-
rael signing a new trade agree- to open access to government
ment with the European Union telecommunications procure-
(EU) because the Europeans ment, raw textile exports and
refuse to significantly open their processed foods and agricultural
products, as well as the refusal to
markets.
At a meeting with Israel For- accord Israel full membership in
eign Minister Shimon Peres, Mr. industrial research and develop-
Harish and Mr. Tsur took excep- ment projects.

Haifa Goes International

Haifa (Israel) Airport will become
an international airfield, with di-
rect flights to locations in Europe.
Israel Transport Minister Yis-
rael Kessar announced this at a
meeting with the heads of the Air-

ports Authority and the Israel
Civil Aviation Administration.
Mr. Kessar said the Haifa run-
way will be lengthened to 1.9 km
to accommodate aircraft capable
of landing anywhere in Europe.
