ENGINEERS and scientists
from the former Soviet Union are
invited to attend a free six-week
course on the Theory of Inventive
Problem Solving (TRIZ) at the
Jewish Community Center in
Oak Park.
Organized by Jewish Voca-
tional Service (JVS) and offered
by Ideation International, the
course is open to persons who par-
ticipated in an introductory pre-
sentation last summer.
Persons who hold master's
and/or doctorate degrees in com-
puters or engineering also may
attend.
The course will be held from 1-
6 p.m. on six consecutive SundAys
starting Jan. 8. An additional 10
to 15 hours per week is required
for homework assignments.
TRIZ is the Russian acronym
for the Theory of Inventive Prob-
lem Solving, a methodology based
on the work of Russian inventor
G.S. Altshuller.
Mr. Altshuller designed a
structured approach to innova-
tion through the solving of diffi-
cult technical problems.

JEWISH Vocational Service
(JVS) was one of six nonprofit or-
ganizations cited for excellence
by Crain's Detroit Business in the
magazine's annual "Best Man-
aged Nonprofit" contest.
JVS received an honorable
mention in the competition,
which was judged by an inde-
pendent panel of area profes-
sionals with ties to the nonprofit
sector.
First place went to the Hospice
of Southeastern Michigan and
Lighthouse of Oakland County
was the first runner-up. The Sal-
vation Army and the Children's
Center also received honorable
mention and Alternatives for
Girls earned special mention.

DAVE BASSEIT is one of two
principals in Communications
Strategies, a new public relations
consulting firm located in Bloom-
field Hills.
The company seeks to help the
senior management of business-
es improve financial results
through more effective commu-
nications programs.
Both Mr. Bassett and Don
Gillard, the other principal in
Communications Strategies, were
longtime public relations execu-
tives with Ameritech, formerly
Michigan Bell. Ameritech is a
client of the new firm.
