for the 1995 International Con-
ference on Arts Medicine and
Therapy in Tel Aviv, where she
will present a paper, "Injury and
Illness in Performing Musicians:
A Psychological Diagnosis."
"I think people who want to be
helped can be helped," Dr. Nagel
said. "I also think that all people
who say they want to be helped
don't necessarily want to be
helped; they'd rather cope with
the pain than try something new.
"I've come to terms with stage
fright partly by doing the work
I do now and talking to other peo-
ple who have experienced the
same kind of anxiety. Before I
stopped performing because I
couldn't straddle two careers, my
husband and I did a whole series
of concerts, and I felt very com-
fortable with what I was doing.
"I found that it's not really a
question of getting rid of stage
fright. It's making it work ap-
propriately. To have no stage
fright is to have no energy.
"It's a little bit like harnessing
electricity, keeping it at a level
where it won't burn down a house
but will still provide warmth and
light. If there's too much elec-
tricity, it's out of control."

She's helped
professionals
advance their
careers.

To channel this energy, Dr.
Nagel recommends that individ-
uals go through an evaluation
process to determine the actual
professional and personal effects
of the fear and whether it is con-
nected to other issues, such as re-
jection.
She recalls helping a patient
who was fine during perfor-
mances but had great difficulty
auditioning. After recognizing
that auditions were subcon-
sciously linked to practicing be-
fore an abusively critical father
and working through those feel-
ings, the performer felt more re-
laxed and was able to find a
professional position.
If a performer has felt rejected
as a child, then that performer
might view the audience as an-
other group that could show re-
jection, a situation she has
uncovered many times as a ther-
apist.
"Stage fright is an anxiety par-
ticularly connected with want-
ing to be accepted, liked and com-
petent and being concerned that
the performance will bring oppo-
site results," Dr. Nagel said. 'The
solution eventually comes from
within the person."
Dr. Nagel is very concerned
about professional performers
who are turning to medications
to deal with stage fright. She re-
ports that many entertainers
