gram will be inspirational and in-
formative for Jewish teens.
"Visiting Israel has a very
powerful impact on a young per-
son's sense of Jewish loyalty," he
said. "Providing programming be-
fore they go and when they come
back can greatly enhance a teen's
Jewish commitment and serves
as a motivation for their friends."
A retreat before the trip is also
being planned, according to Tova
Dorfman, the director of the Is-
rael program.
Once the teens return, they
will participate in an education-
al debriefing and social activities.
"The idea is to preserve the
sunrise at Masada," said Jeff
Kaye, the community shaliach
with the Michigan/Israel Con-
nection. "Every Jew has a rela-
tionship with Israel and that
relationship has to be developed."
Howard Gelberd, the executive
director of the AjE, hopes the ex-
perience will help solidify Jewish
identity and breathe new energy
into the teen community.
"Israel has proven to be a ma-
jor Jewish learning lab," Mr. Gel-
berd said. "As much as we try
and liven up the classroom, it's
more effective to give kids a di-
rect experience."
When that experience takes
place in Israel with peers, rabbis
and trip leaders such as college
students who feel a strong con-
nection to Israel, "it can be a pow-
erful experience," Mr. Gelberd
said.
Added Ms. Dorfman: "We hope
to create a tradition of sending
kids to Israel as part of their Jew-
ish identity. We want teens to
think of going to Israel as a mile-
_ stone, like their bar or bat mitz-
vah."

Agreement Made
With Druse

Jerusalem (JTA) — Finance Min-
ister Avraham Shohat signed an
agreement with Druse leaders,
ending a crisis over Druse de-
mands for more government
funding.
The agreement ended a
monthlong conflict that at times
turned violent. It also averted
threats by Druse Knesset mem-
bers to support no-confidence mo-
tions in the government.
Under the agreement, some
$50 million will be added imme-
diately to the 1995 budget for
Druse local councils. The group
will also get up to $33 million in
additional aid under the agree-
ment.
Israel's 80,000 Druse citizens,
clustered in 18 villages in the
north of the country, have been
complaining that the Israeli gov-
ernment is allotting them only a
fraction of the sums given to Jew-
ish development towns.
