Community-Wide Teen
Israel Trip Planned

area teens to Israel in the
summer of 1996 as part of
a community-wide trip..
With the support of local con-
gregations and Jewish organiza-
tions, the Agency for Jewish
Education and the Michigan/Is-
rael Connection of the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan De-
troit have formed a partnership

is an important program we need

ditional $75,000. That funding
will come from a variety of

gram which includes five weeks

Planning is under way for a community wide teen trip to Israel.

aimed at sending as many Or-
thodox, Conservative, Reform
and unaffiliated teens as possi-
ble to Israel and providing them
with pre- and post-trip program-
ming.
"With an Israel experience
there has to be deliberate pro-
gramming," said Robert Aronson,
the executive vice-president of
the Jewish Federation of Metro-
politan Detroit. "The key is to
make this a total experience for
teens. We have this one oppor-
tunity to make it work. We want
this trip to be a door opener for
ongoing community-wide pro-
gramming. Our hope is that it
will take us to the vision of giv-
ing every Jewish teen an Israel
experience."
The concept of a community-
wide teen trip to Israel has been
on the agenda for some time.
Funding from the Ben Teitel
Charitable Trust helped make
the idea become a reality. The
fund pledged $100,000 and chal-
lenged Federation to match it.
Mr. Aronson said Federation

gan/Israel Connection.
Open to those 15 through 17,
participants will tour Israel, en-
gage in educational programming
and spend a week with teens
from the central Galilee, Detroit's
Partnership 2000 sister region.
The trip is being offered in ad-
dition to other Israel programs
already available to teens.

Pre-trip programming, done
through individual congregations
and agencies, will include learn-
ing about Israel and Jewish iden-
tity. Rabbi Irwin Groner of
Congregation Shaarey Zedek will
be a participant in at least a por-
tion of the trip and feels the pro-
