such diverse subjects as Bernard
Malamud's literary treatment of
the Holocaust and William Sty-
ron's Sophie's Choice.
Much writing about the Holo-
caust Professor Langer finds
questionable, designed, he says,
to "console rather than confront."
Among the more successful
pieces Professor Langer consid-
ers is The Murders at Bullen-
huser Damm, a German
journalists's "painstakingly as-
sembled" documentary of the
hanging of 20 Jewish children
aged 5 to 12.

The real value of this impor-
tant book is the insights it gives
us into the minds of the killers, or-
dinary men of no singular abili-
ty who gain our attention because
they were powerful and willing
enough to murder, without com-
punction of demurral, little Jew-
ish children.
Fortunately, 11 of the SS in-
volved in the murder were exe-
cuted in 1946. But Dr. Kurt
Heissmeyer escaped.
Professor Langer describes Dr.
Heissmeyer as a seemingly in-
nocuous figure who, had there
been no World War II, probably
would have "spent his life as an
obscure country practitioner,
ministering to the aches and
pains of the local population."
When Dr. Heissmeyer is at last
captured in 1959, he speaks of his
medical experiments on Jewish
children. "For me there was no
basic difference between human
beings and guinea pigs — be-
tween Jews and guinea pigs."
Others involved in the crime
try to absolve themselves with
the ubiquitous, "but I was only
following orders," while Max
Pauly — the commandant who
sent the order for the murders —
insisted "I always acted in the in-
terests of the prisoners, doing my
duty to the very end." El
