funds for the open amphitheater
where numerous outdoor perfor-
mances are held. Puppeteers
from England, a choir from Chile,
Israeli folk dancers, flamenco gui-
tarist Baldi Oliver, an orchestra
of classical musicians who are re-
cent emigres from Russia — all
these performed in Liberty Bell
Garden this past summer.
Just behind the amphitheater,
we came to the blue railroad car-
turned-theater which is known
as the Train Puppet Theater. It
was placed in the park 14 years
ago when four young puppeteers
wanted to start a puppet theater.
"They said, 'We don't want a
conventional theater. We found
an old train wagon and we want
to bring it from Haifa Port,' " re-
lated Ms. Rivlin-Tsur.
The train was converted to a
theater, painted bright blue and
used for numerous puppet per-
formances. When it finally be-
came too old to use, a new
amphitheater was built as an ex-
tension. But the original train
wagon remains in the park as a
favorite landmark.
As for the young performers,
they went on to become pioneers
in puppet theater, developing the
International Puppet Festival
held in Liberty Bell Garden each
year.
Petrie Plaza is
often the site of
crafts fairs.
"It draws puppeteers from
around the world, and thousands
of people take part in it," said Ms.
Rivlin -Tsur, whose next project
for the park is an entire center of
arts for children, including a
workshop for building puppets.
Continuing our walk through
the park, we came to the arts
workshop where artists work on
hand crafts while onlookers
watch them.Walking further, we
saw the bright red paving stones
of Petrie Plaza, which is often the
site of crafts fairs, exhibitions and
open air dancing.
Giving Jerusalem's diverse res-
idents a chance to enjoy such var-
ied experiences together is one
important purpose of the park.
As we walked back towards .
the bell, Ms. Rivlin-Tsur told
about one recent concert that fea-
tured Arab and Jewish musi-
cians, who played music together
and also highlighted their sepa-
rate styles.
"There was a wonderful re-
sponse from the audience, a very
open, warm and spontaneous re-
sponse," she related. "And there
was such a genuine sense of ease
between the musicians — and
between the Arabs and Jews in
the audience, too. If we had to
judge Arab-Israeli relations from
the people at the concert, we
could say that all problems have
been solved." ❑
