unusual sculptures, all by local
artists.
Near the center of the prome-
nade was the bell itself. While
tourists admired it, several
youngsters were up close, ex-
ploring it from all angles. One boy
even positioned himself under the
bell, poking his head inside.
Not far from the bell, other
children were climbing up and
down on the interactive sculp-
tures with whimsical shapes.
Further on, the Rincon Music
Pavilion was a festive scene, with
people, clapping and waving their
hands as two musicians played
lively tunes on an accordion and
tambourine.
They were guests at the bar
mitzvah reception for Heske Ak-
bchev. Earlier, the boy, who was
born in Tashkent and now lives
in Toronto, has his bar mitzvah
ceremony at the Western Wall.
But then the guests came to the
park for the reception.
"My dad picked this place and
I'm glad he did," said Heske, as
guests did a lively horah in the
bright sunshine.
Nearby, two Arab women with
baby carriages sat on a bench and
watched the festivities with in-
terest.
The mood was only slightly
less exuberant in the sport area,
where a lively game of soccer was
in progress.
In the open air library, chil-
dren, both Arab and Jewish, were
pouring over colorful books and
games and getting ready for the
storytelling hour.
There's no other place where
you can see such a cross-section
of all the people of Jerusalem,"
said Goni Rivlin-Tsur, who's been
involved with Liberty Bell Gar-
den for 15 years.
After my initial exploration,
she met me in the park to give me
background about it and show me
more of its highlights.
"The park was planned as an
outdoor community center for
everyone, and it helped create an
atmosphere of co-existence long
before we could even dream of
peace," said Ms. Rivlin-Tsur, who
works with the Jerusalem Foun-
dation.
Liberty Bell Garden was one
of the earliest projects of the foun-
dation, an organization spear-
headed by former Jerusalem
mayor Teddy Kolleck. It supports
varied cultural projects for the
city.
Created 20 years ago, the park
was designed by Olrick Plesner,
an Israeli architect with exper-
tise in landscaping. After the
plans got under way, donors pro-
vided funds for specific activities
or areas. The bell itself was a gift
from donors in Philadelphia. "It's
a symbol of our friendship with
the United States," said Ms.
Rivlin-Tsur.
Donor Lou Stein provided the
