Tzedakah
Program Slated
Families of children attending
the Adat Shalom Synagogue Re-
ligious school will participate in
Yad B'Yad, a creative program
Oct. 30 to learn about the impor-
tance of giving back to the com-
munity. Children in kindergarten
through 7th grade and their par-
ents will take part.
Scheduled during class hours,
from 9 to 11 a.m. and 11 a.m. to
1 p.m., each family will be given
the profile of a fictional family in
need to gain an understanding of
what not so fictitious families
must go through on a daily basis
to survive. Each family will be
provided with enough play mon-
ey, and, if appropriate, food
stamps, to pay bills and buy food
for one week. To learn how to
make ends meet on limited bud-
gets, the families will have the
opportunity to "pay bills" at the
"bank" and "shop" at the "store."
In addition, representatives of
local Jewish social service agen-
cies will be on hand to provide in-
formation to families to help solve
their "problems" and to inform
the entire group about commu-
nity services which are available.
Finally, the agencies will in-
form the real families about vol-
unteer opportunities, enabling
them to put their learning into
action. Participants will start the
volunteer process that morning
by making a Chanukah package
for clients of Yad Ezra, our local
kosher food pantry.
Co-sponsored by the Religious
School and the Adat Shalom So-
cial Action Committee, the pro-
gram is designed to be a call to
action for greater involvement in
both the Jewish community and
greater Detroit communal ser-
vices.
Yad B'Yad is the kick-off event
for a new tzedakah (the obliga-
tion of all Jews to take care of
those who are less fortunate) cur-
riculum developed by the reli-
gious school staff, headed by
Ronald Leff; director of education
and youth. The entire program
will be run by synagogue volun-
teers periodically throughout the
year on those Sundays when the
teaching staff is participating in
in-service workshops.
Agencies participating in the
Oct. 30 morning are: Yad Ezra,
Jewish Family Service, Jewish
Vocational Service, Hebrew Free
Loan Association, Jewish Home
for Aged/Fleishman Residence,
Jewish Resettlement Service, and
Jewish Information and Referral
Service.
For information, contact
Ronald Leff, 626-2153.
