Samuel Bak
Retroepective

The Janice Charach Epstein Muse-
um/Gallery will present a retrospective
of the internationally acclaimed artist
Samuel Bak from Nov. 5 through Jan.
12. The opening night reception, Nov. 5
at 7 p.m., will coincide with the open-
ing of the Jewish Community Center's
annual Book Fair.
Mr. Bak will be at the reception and
as speaker Nov. 6 at 1 p.m. Mr. Bak
will autograph his catalogues and
books at these times.
Samuel Bak's work reflects his ex-
periences as a survivor of the Holo-
caust. His paintings contain a visual
vocabulary addressing universal
themes and the plight of the human
condition.The artist will be in the
gallery Nov. 6 from noon-4 p.m. The
public is welcome free of charge.
The Janice Charach Epstein Mu-
seum/Gallery is located in the Jew-
ish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit, 6600 West
Maple Road, West Bloomfield. Gallery hours are Monday-Wednesday, 11 a.m.-6 p.m.,

Is A Reminder

Fleischer Leads

Torah Study

Shula Fleischer will lead the Con-
servative Movement's weekly
Torah study series Nov. 3 from
12:30-1:30 p.m. at the Max M. Fish-
er Building. The program is spon-
sored by the Michigan Region the
the United Synagogue, the Jewish
Theological Seminary and the
Michigan Region Rabbinical As-
sembly,
Ms. Fleischer, a teacher at Hil-
lel Day School for over 20 years, is
completing a degree in Jewish ed-
ucation at the Jewish Theological
Seminary in New York. She re-
ceived her masters' from the Uni-
versity of Michigan and has a
teaching certificate from the
Teacher's Seminary at the Uni-
versity of Tel Aviv.
Participants will study the week-
ly Torah portion with traditional
and contemporary sources. There
is no charge for the class and reser-
vations are not required.

Professor
Speaks At Adat Shalom

Dr. Ruth Wisse, a writer on Jewish politi-
cal affairs, will speak 3:30 p.m. Nov. 13 at
Adat Shalom Synagogue. Admission is free.
Dr. Wisse, professor of Yiddish and com-
parative literature at Harvard University,
will speak on the state of world Jewry un-
der the auspices of La'Asot, a Detroit area
organization dedicated to uncompromising
support of Israel and to fighting anti-Semi-
tism.
Before joining Harvard, Dr. Wisse taught
at McGill University for seven years. She
also taught at Hebrew University, Stanford
University, New York University and Tel
Aviv University.
She has written three books and edited
four others; she is senior editor of the Li-
brow), of Yiddish Classics.

Religious schools have joined other volunteers in making panels for the AIDS Memo-
rial Quilt which is being brought to the community by the Michigan Jewish AIDS
Coalition and by the Ben N. Teitel Charitable Trust.
The quilt will be displayed a the Maple/Drake Jewish Community Center. Birm-
ingham Temple, Temple Israel in Ann Arbor, Temple Emanu-El, Temple Kol Arni,
