ongregations B'nai David
and B'nai Moshe have a
tentative date set to con-
summate their mar-
riage...or go their separate ways.
The merger committees of the
two synagogues have planned
Sunday morning, Nov. 6, for sep-
arate votes on whether the two
congregations will merge. Voting
procedures are being established,
but B'nai David will allow its
members to designate a proxy if
they cannot be present, and B'nai
Moshe will allow absentee bal-
lots.
The vote will end months of
speculation. B'nai David mem-
bers have been divided on merg-
ing or trying to maintain a
separate identity by building a
synagogue on a Maple Road site
in West Bloomfield.
The congregation has been dis-
cussing a joint structure with the
Sephardic Community of Greater
Detroit, which presently rents
space at Congregation Beth
Achim.
Both B'nai David President
Philip Bolton and Sephardic
Community President Jacob
David agree, however, that any
further discussions about sepa-
rate use of a jointly owned facil-
ity will have to take place after
Nov. 6.
Mr. David said architects have
modified B'nai David's plans for
the interior of the Maple Road
proposal. "The Sephardic Com-
munity is ready to go to the next
level," Mr. David said. "But we
have to wait and see what hap-
pens with B'nai David."
In the interim, B'nai David is
continuing to hold Saturday
morning Shabbat services at the
Maple-Drake Jewish Communi-
ty Center. The congregation is
planning a "reunion Shabbat ser-
vice" 9 a.m. Oct. 1, which will be
led by Rabbi Morton Yolkut, Can-
tor Usher Adler, Sexton Hershl
Roth and his son, Yoel.
The congregations
vote separately.
Rabbi Yolkut was released af-
ter 17 years with B'nai David,
when the congregation vacated
its Southfield facility last spring.
The city of Southfield purchased
the building four years ago and
plans to turn it into a cultural
center.
Cantor Adler is the son of B'nai
David's longtime cantor, and the
Rev. Roth served many years as
the congregation's sexton.
