Irina Lekhtman

Soprano Sings
For Music Club

In the continued celebration of its
70th anniversary, the Music
Study Club of Metropolitan De-
troit will present mezzo sopra-
no Irina Lekhtman at the
opening program meeting Sept.
25. Accompanying Ms. Lekhtman
will be Zina Astrakhan. The
meeting will begin at 2 p.m. with
a social hour and 3 p.m. program.
The meeting will be held at the
Birmingham Temple. Ms. Lekht-
man will sing selections from
opera, Russian art songs,and Yid-
dish songs.
Ms. Lekhtman, who will sing
with the Michigan Opera Theater
this season, was a leading mezzo
soprano with the Moldavian
State Opera. Accompanist Zina
Astrakhan is an accomplished
teacher and chamber music per-
former. She is a graduate from
the Leningrad College of Music
and the Leningrad State Con-
servatory.
Non-members are welcome.

The Music Study Club will
honor five of its members for out-
standing service at the meeting.
Honored will be: Claire Brown
for her 15 years as chairperson of
the Scholarship Committee; past
president Corliss Rosenberg for
her dedication as chairperson for
the MSC annual Artist Concert;
Joan Rose, past president, for her
creativeness in planning; corre-
sponding secretary Ann Ross for
her work on publicity, public re-
lations; Vera Rollin Burke for 20
years as editor of Pizzicato.

Trumpet master Marcus Bel-
grave will perform at "A Taste of
Jazz" to benefit Kadima, a non-
profit agency offering support ser-
vices to adults with psychiatric
disabilities. "A Taste ofJazz," an
evening featuring music and food
by local restaurateurs, will be
held at 7 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Roy-
al Oak Music Theater.

Viorst To Speak
On Growing Up

"What's a Grown Up?" is the ti-
tle of a 7:45 p.m. Sept. 21 lecture
by author Judith Viorst at the
Birmingham Community House.
She is best known for her 1986
book, Necessary Losses, a per-
sonal development guide which

was on the New York Times best-
seller list for over a year. Re-
cently, Ms. Viorst published
Murdering Mr. Monti, a humor-
ous novel.
'What's a Grown Up?" explores
the growing up process in terms
of how human life evolves
through changing relationships
with children and aging parents,
understanding ourselves as
adults.
The lecture is sponsored by the
Michigan Psychoanalytic Foun-
dation (MPF).
Tickets can be purchased

Sukkot Hayride
At Heritage Park

The Maple/Drake Jewish Com-
munity Center, a recipient of the
Jewish Federation of Metropoli-
tan Detroit's Max M. Fisher Jew-
ish Community Foundation, will
present a Sukkot Hayride Sept.
18 at 6:30 p.m.
The Me and My Grandchild
Series of the Generations To-
gether community-wide project,
will be held in Heritage Park in
Farmington Hills. The event will
feature singing, dancing, a bon-
fire and cider and donuts. Regis-
