SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

There are historic and exiting
things happening in Israel these
days, but normal life goes on,
with all its own exciting trivia.
Just to be Certain. More
and more of the Jewish settlers
in Gaza and in the Golan are
burying their dead in cemeteries
in Israel proper, in case there will
be border changes. They want to
be able to visit the graves of their
loved ones without having to ac-
quire a visa.
Hope Springs Eternal The
Jerusalem Medical Center deal-
ing with male impotence recent-
ly successfully treated a patient
who insisted he wanted to con-
tinue to fulfill the biblical mitz-
vah to "be fruitful and multiply".
He is 88.
Signs of the Times. Sever-
al months ago the National As-
sociation of University Students
in Israel elected as its president
27-year-old Mas'ad Kadur, of Tel
Aviv University. He is a Druze,
residing in the village of Daliat
elCarmel.
By Advice of the Psycholo-
gists. When the Ministry of Fi-
nance presented the Knesset
with the fat volume of the pro-
posed budget for the coming year,
hoping for approval, the book was
bound in a green cover, calculat-
ed to win sympathetic consider-
ation.
Speaking of Gaza. The nat-
ural increase in the population
there is 5 percent. Some 35,000
children are born there each year,
or a new baby every 14 minutes.
By the end of the decade the Arab
population in Gaza should total
a million.
- Question of Halachah Up
in the Air. On a recent El Al
flight a dispute broke out be-
tween two groups of haredim as
to when the evening prayers
should be said. One rebbe in-
sisted that until they actually
landed in Israel, they should fol-
low New York time; another
maintained that the moment
they boarded the plane they could
consider themselves already in
the Holy Land. There was no
compromise, and the two groups
performed their worship at dif-
ferent times.
A Clean-Shaven Arafat?
Everyone knows that Yassir
Arafat always wears his check-
ered kheffiyah to hide the fact
that he is bald. What is not so
well known is that he regards his
scraggly beard as a symbol of the
Arab revolt. He shaved it off only
once, to avoid identification when
he secretly flew out of Beirut to
meet with Sadat in Cairo on the
eve of the Egypt-Israel peace
pact. He went through the Beirut
airport dressed in a regular suit
