Strawberries
From Israel

SHARON KANON
SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

Strawberries. Do you like them
large in size, shapely and sweet,
firm and flavorful? Israel's deli-
cious produce combines all these
qualities.
"Other countries have empha-
sized high yield and firmness over
taste," said Eva Izsak, the main
strawberry breeder at Israel's
Volcani Agricultural Research
Center in Beit Dagan. Ms. Izsak,
a plant physiologist working with
geneticist Professor Shamay
Izhar since 1970, has developed
and released more than ten va-
rieties of strawberries, and plans
to release another four or five
new varieties.
The varieties are the result of
a four-year process of cross-breed-
ing and selection of some 10,000
seedlings. Only one percent are
picked for further breeding. Out
of these 100 lines, only 10 or 12
are planted.
Strawberry growers expect to
export more than 2,000 tons.

Most of the growers are located
in Israel's relatively mild Sharon
plain north of Tel Aviv. Great
Britain, Germany, Holland and
Scandinavia are the main mar-
kets for the sweet Israeli straw-
berry.
Recently, Israeli strawberry
growers began producing straw-
berry plants for export. "This
opens a new market for selling
millions of plants abroad," said
the Israeli breeder.
