MICHAEL ELKIN SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

D

uchemin is a real stitch."I
am the goy part of the film.
I represent Fausto," laughs
the French director in ref-
erence to his new movie, A La
Mode (In Fashion), and its lead
character, a non-Jewish orphan
who fashions a career for himself
as a fashion designer while work-
ing with the tailor.
Duchamin, who co-scripted the
screenplay with Richard
Morgieve, the Jewish author of
Fausto — the novel upon which
the movie is based — concerns
himself with the big picture of life.

What film-maker Duchemin
discovered is that "it's good to do
films about relationships."
He can well relate to someone
making his way in the world. A
La Mode is his debut feature as
a director after years of serving
as an assistant under such promi-
nent directors as Joseph Losey
and Marco Ferreri.
Vive la difference "When you
make a film — especially the first
film — you learn, you meet a lot
of people different from you," says
the 43-year-old director. "You get
to appreciate that difference."
