ner," Mr. Reiner says, his glee ev-
ident over the span of 20 years
and through the fiber optic net-
work. "Mel is never as good as
when he's talking off the top of
his head."
To keep the panic at a critical
level, Mr. Reiner always had to
be ready to throw the next volley.
`The straight man is usually a co-
median who doesn't have to make
the joke," he says, "but he has to
understand the joke. He has to
know when to get out of the way."

I
f the whole thing didn't move
at such breakneck speed, it
would be hard to suspend dis-
belief willingly. Here was a
man, 2,000 years old — who lived
in caves. A man who stepped
from the shadows of the Middle
East — speaking in a Yiddish ac-
cent.
Here was a character who rep-
resented something more impor-
tant than the person he purported
to be. The 2000 Year Old Man re-
flected the way first-generation
American Jews saw themselves
and their immigrant parents.
"We mock the thing we are to
be," the sage tells Mr. Reiner af
ter he has made fun of his par-
ents' self-denial, only to reveal
that he behaves the same way —
"Ma, pa, sit down" "No, standing's
good."
Mr. Reiner and Mr. Brooks
were writers and performers on
TV's classic "Your Show of
Shows" in the 1950s when they
began amusing themselves and
friends with a routine about a
2,000-year-old man. In 1960, en-
tertainer Steve Allen pressed the
pair to turn their shtick into a
comedy album. At the time, Mr.
Reiner had not yet launched the
successful 'Dick Van Dyke Show"
and Mr. Brooks was virtually un-
employed. Still, they were reluc-
tant.
"We thought it was only for
Jews," Mr. Reiner says of the rou-
tine that relied on a particular-
ly skewed Jewish view of the
world. "We thought it could stim-
ulate anti-Semitism. Then we re-
alized it was universal."

The first album and the ones
that followed in 1961 and 1962
contained routines in addition to
the 2000 Year Old Man, all with
Mr. Reiner as the unflagging in-
terviewer. Mr. Brooks played an
astronaut, before the U.S.
manned space program got off
the ground ("I'm a little nervous.
I'm afraid I'm going to lose my
life.")
Mr. Brooks remains uninter-
ested in resurrecting the charac-
ter. But Mr. Reiner, who remains
close to Mr. Brooks, would love to
bring the by-now 2,000 and thin
ty-four-year-old man back for an-
other album.
"I would love to do another," he
sF. ,',-;. "I'm just dying to hear what
Mel's going to say." [I]
