New York; this is one of
them.
Actually, this one is more
naked than most.
TV isn't the only place where
"NYPD Blue" means bare breasts
and butts.
In a spread attracting world-
wide attention, Playboy is play-
ing up its uncover story on one of
New York's finest.Cop Carol
Shaya is capturing attention,
which seems to suit the Israeli
native just fine.
Israeli?
That's right, born in Jaffa, she
says proudly, wearing her her-
itage like a badge of honor.
Funny, she doesn't look Jew-
ish.

She is having some trouble
with acceptance within the police
department these days, getting
a dressing down for undressing

desk job, reassigned from street
patrol in the rough-and-tough
42nd District.
The dispute seems to focus on
whether Shaya used any part of
her regulation outfit to pose for
the magazine. Only the pants

And she isn't. Shaya is Greek
Orthodox. But she willingly talks
of her Israeli roots. "My descen-
dants go back to the days of
Palenstine," says the cop who left
Israel with her mother and
grandmother at the age of four
and has a number of relatives
"some of them Jewish" still living
in her homeland.
As she told the magazine of her
arrival on these shores, "I went
to Catholic school. At first, I felt
like an outcast. Everyone was ei-

gunning for Shaya when it was
revealed recently she had posed
in a thong, her back to the cam-
era, for a rapper's album.
Bad rap, she said, claiming she
didn't do anything wrong. It
wasn't like she was endorsing the
harsh and vulgar lyrics inside,
she says.
Her application to Playboy was
a shot in the dark, she says dur-
ing our interview. "I did it on a
whim, on my honeymoon."
In a cop's uniform, she couldn't
get arrested for her looks, she
claims. "Trust me. You don't feel
beautiful in this uniform." ❑
