dividuslized, relatively unstruc-
tured program. It allows plenty
of time to practice between
lessons, as well as time for re-
laxation and socializing, a rarity
in may master class programs.
The main focus at Keshet
Eilon is on nurturing future
soloists. The teachers work not
only on technique, but also on
stage presence development of
an individual style and freedom
of expression, body language, and
establishment of rapport with the
audience—all essential elements
for a solo string artist.
Every student is given an op-
portunity to study face to face
with an outstanding violinist, but
also to gain "solo hours" on stage,
appearing before an audience in
small halls and in open-air con-
certs in the kibbutz and sur-
rounding localities. All told, more
than a dozen concerts are held
during the 16-day course. Gain-
ing experience on stage is not
only a matter of dealing with
stage fright and developing stage
presence; it is, also learning to
cope with distractions in the au-
dience or unexpected mishaps on
stage without going to pieces.
Faculty members at Keshet
Eilon also conduct an open pan-
el discussion each year where the
masters candidly share their own
intimate experiences with their

hi addition to a series of mas-
ter classes with the maestros
themselves, Keshet Eilon also
holds a rather unorthodox mas-
ter class with a master violin-
maker and a master bow-maker.
Gifted musicians who play vio-
lins do not always understand
why their instrument responds
as it does. At a makeshift work-
shop, the two artisans not only
make minor repairs, but also ex-
plain to students how to protect
their instruments from damage.
One of the most innovative as-
pects of the Keshet Eilon pro-
gram involves archery lessons
with an Olympic-caliber archer
coach. Archery lessons are the
outgrowth of a theory support-
ed by such outstanding artists as
Israeli violinist Shlomo Mintz
and Italian virtuoso Andrea Acp-
pelletti, that there is a unique in-
teraction between playing the
violin and shooting arrows that
aids in the development of good
violinists.
